To paint or not. Our special needs group have a couple of houses and they want to paint them. Do birds mind or will they be fighting for a des res? ;D
Water resistant, non-toxic, low odour timber treatments should be fine once allowed to dry thoroughly.
I'm not sure about the colour aspect but probably natural greens, browns and maybe darker reds and blues shouldn't bother the birds. Probably the positioning is more important than the colour.
Interesting question - great idea for a simple controlled experiment. ;)
"Which colour do birds like most?"...... just a thought (AT1 Science - Using and Applying)
If you want some ideas just type painted bird boxes into Google. There are some amazing ones.
From the simple to the elaborate

right, but do the birds use them?
If I were you I would keep away from garish colours .It could be an experiment like AR suggested.
They would look nice in the garden anyhow wether or not the birds use them
My most popular are painted red. The chap that made them for me did some research and apparently, red will attract the birdies. No idea quite where he did his research but I don't mind as the boxes are well used.
They decided to paint them with toy safe lacquer at the end, all up, ready for their inhabitants , all with numbers on so we can keep track ;D
I hope you didn't fit, or removed that 'landing stick' under the entrance hole ? Don't forget, birds need a rough surface on the front panel to grip onto before going into the entrance. ;) Cheers, Tony.

I like the numbers idea. I have a few to put up in my elderly parents new garden and numbering them may well save me hours and hours of repeated conversation about which one is which and what (if anything) is using it. ;)
