Hey peeps. ;)
Has anyone grown ginger before? Ive just picked some up from Buy + Queue and the instructions seem a little vague?! ???
I understand that you lay it horizontally and thats about it! Is it best in pots or straight into the ground? Even my Alan Titchmarsh Kitchen Garden Bible doesnt have any info?!!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated! :D
Thank you in advance, fellow gardenists.
Hi_hoe
Yes I gave it ago a couple of years back. Laid it flat in a pot and it rooted well. It sends out large fronded leaves which smell nice when rubbed..It can turn into a bit of a monster though
It is very tender though and needs to be in a heated greenhouse or bought indoors for the winter. It needs a full year to produce more ginger - think of it as a very tender iris with the edible bit being the rhisome.

Ah thanks BN
Great link.
Much aprpreciated!
I have also bought some to try, thanks for the link
A few years ago I had a price which produced a root so I planted it. It became a very attractive pot plant which liked it on a sunny windowsill. Quite a conversation point. People thought it was bamboo.

We grew some from an aldi piece, in the poly and got a bigger piece which we keep in the freezer to grate into food. The plant died the year after in the cold :)
Hi All
I to am going to try Ginger this year for the first time -- if the plant can get out of control would it be better to leave it in a large pot .
Does anybody have an opinion on whether the ginger sold for cultivation as mentioned above from "Buy + Queue" is any different to what is in any supermarket or greengrocers?
top tip: If you are pondering growing ginger, grow tumeric instead or as well as it - they look basically the same (closely related) but turmeric is much smaller and gives you far more of an actual harvest (in that ginger needs a huge pot to produce a lot of ginger whereas turmeric root is much smaller so you get more yield from a smaller plant). Methodology is exactly the same you just need raw root turmeric from your grocer.
I grew this and canded it a few years ago..........qahtan
