Post by: RenishawPhil on January 29, 2012, 11:22:38
Got some shallotts this weekend. When do people generally plant theirs? Was going to put mine in today but am slightly hungover and its to cold. Not a Good combination!

Think will try and get them in next weekend or the one after!

I've worked on Her madge's aircraft with a hangover (and no-one's dead yet),  get a grip man ! ! ! >:( >:(

Don't push them into the ground, this compresses the earth and makes it harder for the roots to grow down.  Dig a small hole.   cover them with mesh as the birds have a jolly time pulling them up again.      Cheers,     Tony.

Gardening is supposed to be a pleasure not a chore!!

When mine arrived, about 3 weeks ago now, I put them into the small modules, just large enough for them to sit on the compost, in the unheated greenhouse. I planted them up the allotment last Monday, they had all filled their module with roots, so they had a head start when they went out. Today when I was up there to pick sprouts a number are beginning to show green shoots (only one was when I put them out).

Well I went up today! Only to find a number of allotments broken into. Including one of.our 2 . The lock cut with bolt cutters. Lots of stuff in shed including a strimmer!( nothing taken !!)

We did have a large area cleared by people on community servuce. Bit if a coincidence! Or just made an area easy to get into!

Obviously planning on coming back! So got trailer and took everything back to the garage.

Then planted the shallots and netted over

Don't some of us plant them in the autumn? I do, partly because they make the allotment look cheerful over the winter with their lovely green bunches of leaves.

Have just bought some more to plant in the "spring" but with frost forecast all week I will wait a bit.
