Title: Source of new Yacon variety
Post by: Ian Pearson on January 15, 2012, 19:32:23
Red Yacon 'Fiorella' has just been made commercially available in the UK. I can confirm it's a goodie. I've got some photos here http://oca-testbed.blogspot.com/2012/01/yacon-fiorella-goes-to-market.html (http://oca-testbed.blogspot.com/2012/01/yacon-fiorella-goes-to-market.html)

Very reasonable at £7.50 including postage. Available here:

Looking at the photos on the site..doesn't yacon need peeling at all before eating?
I've grown yacon and did well..and then the bloody winter 2010 did finished  it all off.. >:( I didn't even get a taster...  >:(

The skin is a little bitter, and is best peeled. But a little bit will not do any harm. Storing them for a while really improves the taste.
It's annoying when the frost gets to the propagation tubers though. You need to be careful to store them over the winter in a frost-free place.

Thanks for this supplier. I was looking for a source of yacon a month or so back but I found Allotments 4 All instead. I lost all my yacon last winter and by the time I was sure none had survived it was rather too late to get a replacement. I was gutted to see Realseeds wouldn't have any this year, so a new supplier is most welcome. Does anybody have any info on how this variety compares with what Realseeds supplied? I found it quite refreshing to eat raw rather like a crisp sweet apple, in texture though not taste. For cooking it was good in stirfry. I like the idea of making syrup but only heard of that idea recently. When I grew it before, the plants only made it to about 2 feet high so I wasn't expecting much but was amazed to see the biggest tubers were about 8 inches long, looking kind of like a yam.

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy026.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) My new Yacon tubers arrived!.. ;D They are small but the growing points look very fat and strong..actually even they are 'small' they still look like generous size starters.
Very happy with mine.

Already bought some - 3 caudices ( the bits that make new plants). Had an email today saying they are on their way. Really looking forward to trying them and making Yacon Syrup in due course.

This newbies first post! :)

The yacon arrived today well protected in their packet. Three very healthy caudices.

They already have the beginnings of shoots on them so I'm confident they will grow away just fine. They are now planted in pots in the greenhouse to grow on along with some oca, one that already has its first leaf. :)

I try to grow at least a couple of new things every year to keep things interesting and me on my toes.

Looking forward to seeing these tuberous crops devellop in the months ahead. :)
