Title: Small warning on postage
Post by: davejg on January 15, 2012, 16:53:25
Someone (sorry cant remember who) sent me 5 blue hubbard seeds in a 3" x 5" envelope, someone in the post office decided this made it thick enough to be a large letter. When i collected this paying the 22p + a quid i slipped it through the size guide on the counter proving that it was small enough to be standard size. I was then informed whoever makes the decision becomes godlike as it is irreversible and unquestionable. So if your sending beans or squash seeds probably worth puttng an extra second class stamp on.

Are you sure you slipped it through the correct size guide?  The thickness limit for 'letter' size is 5mm (less than quarter of an inch) - I'd guess that squash seeds might be thicker than 5mm so wouldn't go through the 5mm slot.  The slot for large letter is 25mm (close to one inch) so the seeds would obviously go through that one.  If the envelope was thicker than 5mm you should have been charged for large letter size.  If the envelope was thinner than 5mm you should complain - I've found them pretty good at refunding and paying compensation, usually in the form of stamps.

Unless they're very small seeds, I just assume I need a large letter. It's getting expensive, but at least it's safe!

It's quite possible the seeds had clumped up in transit...  :-X

When I posted some beans they shook them down to the bottom and then insisted I pay for a package.

I would not expect a squash seed to go through the letter slot it is very small.  They say 5mm but I am sure that the slots in the plastic devises in the post office are much small.  They say it has to drop through so you cannot pull it.

My son sent me something which was well thin enough, not only did they charge me extra but it took two weeks to arrive.   When I queried it I got a refund but it was a lot of hassle.

I don't have blue hubbard seeds, but I have tried various squash seeds and all the packets but one fitted through the letter slot with no problem.

As saddad said, if they are loose in the envelope, they will all clump together and and then be sput out of the sizing machine as too thick.

If you do want to keep the postage down, you need to stop them moving about, sticking them between masking tape is one way.

The slot is 5mm, the amount I had to pay for the thing I would hope it was accurate.

This is current RM thinking, they have just asked our place for £4000 todeliver stuff before 11am. not bothered about the extra to cet the seeds just wanted to make everyone aware, some oviously were.
Yes it did go through the slot.

I haven't had a problem, but this has come up several times since they invented large letters.
