ok, planning my allotment fruit bed, i have the following questions for people in the know or with the relevant literature:
i want to grow raspberry, white or red currant, gooseberry, and possibly a hybrid such as loganberry or tayberry.
could you tell me: how far do they need to be spaced? how much fruit do they produce if known? do i need more than one variety of something for pollination and fruiting purposes? if so, what? or can some of those fruits be combined for the same purpose, i.e. can be different species?
many thanks
svea
Take a look here, http://gardenaction.co.uk/
or on Ken Muir's site www.kenmuir.co.uk (http://www.kenmuir.co.uk)
Jeremy
thanks for that first site, derbex. :) that is helpful.
however, the question about 'partners' for pollination still remains. can i just have one of each, do they compliment each other, or so i need two or more of each species?
thanks
svea
Svea,
raspberries definately don't need partners, and I don't think the others do either (else I've made a c*ck-up this year, because I've planted single redcurrents and gooseberries ???).
Are they going on an allotment? If so there are probably plenty of partners around anyway.
OK, you got me worried -although I was pretty sure I'd checked originally : Gooseberries are self-fertile, so are currants, raspberries, and at least some of the hybrid berries.
Jeremy
thanks jeremy, and sorry to have you worried. that was not my intention :)
the loganberry in my garden has no 'partners', neither does the raspberries, gooseberry, blackcurrant or blackberry! all fruit well for me.
the loganberry will swarm with bees when the flowers are out.
