Title: Recomend an early waxy spud
Post by: sunloving on January 14, 2012, 10:01:22
Hello all
Ive finally given in and dedicated the front garden to veg! so ive now got room for some spuds. We get blight around mid july and so aside from the pink fir apple which just about make it I was wondering if you could recomend a hardy (live up north) early waxy that i might get from ordinary spots like wilkies or the potato day in two weeks time?

Thanks in advance and happy new year

I grew Charlotte, Nicola and Nadine from Wilco's last year and had excellent results. All are early/2nd earlies (I put them all in at the same time I admit), and Charlotte can be left in as long as you like and be harvested as baking sized potatoes until the blight catches up with you... ;D

I second Charlotte and Nadine, both gorgeous waxy potatoes. I haven't grown Nicola for a few years but remember it as being very tasty.

I don't know if you can get Amandine there? They are a good early.

The finest waxy spud is the second early variety named Charlotte. Its a salad potato which is not normally prone to desease or attack by slugs.
It is widely available from most seed catalogues.
Plant out the first week of April when the soil begins to warm up and you will get a crop at the end of August or early September.
I have tried many different varieties but have not found one to beat it.
Being waxy its no good for mash .You will need a floury type like Arran pilot which is also an early type.
I grow earlies to avoid late potato blight.
Good luck.

Thankyou all , lots of votes for charlotte and nadine. (nicola and rocket and amandine to look out for to)
I got a few from wilkies yesterday but was shocked to see there were no pink fir apple this year. Nice big helathy packs of onions though for 1.50. Had to ignore all the summer bulbs as bank is empty!
Will have to queue for the early doors at potato day next week - they sold out in 30 mins last year!

You might like to try Anya, a cross between PFA and desiree. Classed as 2nd early, and available in my local Wilkos.

I think it's technically an early main... but still out by the end of July before the blight has arrived..  :-\
