Title: seen today
Post by: cleo on January 11, 2012, 19:46:07
A large bird of prey -a kestrel? hovering low over next door. Then a single blackbird rose and `escorted` it away.,

I`ve seen rooks go mob handed but this was a single blackbird-is that unusual??

Two birds of prey hover in the UK, kestrel and buzzard...latter much larger. Neitgher regularly prey on songbirds...buzzard is too big / slow, kestrel mainly feed on rodents, so neither pose that much of a danger to a blackbird. I doubt you'd see a blackbird mobbing a hobby or sparrowhawk in flight  :o
