Title: Storm damage
Post by: lottie lou on January 07, 2012, 14:38:29
First time I have been able to get to lottie since high winds.  Boo Hoo, my shed is a load of firewood.  On the plus side I have a base, roof and door.  Just need some sides now.

Sorry to hear that - my plastic greenhouse is now more of a flat than a house!

Can you fix it or have the sides totally vanished?

Doubt it, found pieces of it on other plots.  My fault should have used something more substantial than a plastic chair with a couple of bricks on it to keep door "locked"..

A tree has fallen over the top of my plot, fortunately damaging only the compost area but also making it hard to dig the top area. Have asked the council to move it but am not holding my breath.

Very bad luck about the shed. Makes me wonder how mine is getting on, as have not been back since the most recent winds.

Try freecycle you might find some fence panels that might work for you :)

They might let you keep the wood when they do come :) Make a nice bug hotel or a nice seat for you :)

Although you might also want to try freecycle you find people on there (with chainsaws) willing to come and get the tree for firewood :)

What a good idea Cam7.  Ask around the site first as there is usually someone who knows someone needing free firewood.

Thinking about making sides for shed out of either plywood or shiplap depending on costs.  Pity we aren't allowed brick - would be the easiest option for me..

Well the world is your oyster who says you need a standard square shed made of wood??? If you can find some glass doors i am sure you can build a shed come greenhouse come little corner of heaven :) And you have time :)

Crumbs....don't get me started.  One of my neighbours from the far east has built himself a shack out of fence panels and plastic sheeting.  There have been complaints from various plot holders claiming it is unsightly but there is nothing in the rules about having a shack although there is one about permanent fottings ie: brick structures.

this may seem like daft question but why do you even have sheds to store stuff. if you lock shed people steal from you, if do not lock shed people steal from you and if the shed fall apart in bad weather. seem it would be easier not to go into as much trouble and use a more basic form of shelter in case bad weather. just transport your tools and equipment  to plot when you need them.

Our Lottie neighbours greenhouse had a few glass panels blown out today. All over his plot and ours! I tidied it up and hopefully the rest of the windows will hold out!

Impossible given the amount of tools we use,our sheds are homes from homes and wouldnt want to live without them

Not all sheds get broken into, plainleaf. Touch wood . I've had my plot for 4 years and never had a break-in.

Actually plainleaf sheds are part of allotment culture.  Part of a tradition going back in time.  We are not allowed them so I agree they are not strictly necessary.

Perhaps this sums it up

Cover on polytunnel will need some repair.  Have now taken it off frame till better weather.  Frame OK.
Re Shed;  What do you do if you want to go if no shed?  Doesn't matter if it's not pretty, grow a climber to cover.  Something like a nice rose, honeysuckle or a grape vine etc.   The bee's will love the flowers and the small birds will have some where to perch.
Digeroo, have the lakes refilled yet?

Although we have had no Wind/Storm damage, my next door neighbour is a self employed Fencer, on Saturday he said he would be replacing the fence between our drives which he started to do yesterday, on arriving home from work tonight what a cracking job it is, 4"x4" posts, good strong panels supported by rails and finished with a trellis on top, Thanks Jim, :)

It actually needs four walls.  One is flat on ground and the other three heaven only knows where.
