Title: Can I plant King Edwards
Post by: Grumpy Git on February 14, 2005, 11:35:06
This might be a silly question, but I have a bag of King Edwards that I bought in Sainsbury's.  They are shooting/chitting and some of the sprouts are about an 3/4 inch in length.  Can I plant them or should I compost em?

If yuo bung them in the compost, they will grow and you will get spuds!  I have had some of the best slug free spuds from my compost heap.  There are lots of differences of opinion about planting shop brought spuds.  They are not certified seed so may be harbouring diseases that you don't want in your plot, the whole crop may fail miserably however, they might not and you might get an excellent harvest.  I really think this is one of the decisions you have to make yourself.  ;D

As Emma says - if you want to save money & time & can take a reasonable risk, bung 'em in! After, I would suggest, greening them up a bit.

Eat them or compost them.

I should NOT take the risk of getting a disease on my plot and not be able to grow potatoes there next year!!!

Buy proper seed potatoes, is my advice. but......who am I????

At our allotment complex you have to be able to show the tag of the seed potatoes when asked by a committee member, failing this you can dig them up and take them off the complex to be disposed of.

I guess on you own land you can do want you want heh?

I am on the `grow them in the compost bin side`-that is if you have a bin that is ripening nicely already-as EJ said-some of the best spuds come that way.

Well I think I'll compost them and see. This is my first season and after doing all the back breaking work I don't want to introduce any nasties. ;)
