Title: Pay Pal
Post by: betula on January 03, 2012, 21:05:12
Anybody had a random security check when you log in to pay pal?

They ae asking for confirmation of card details and bank account number.

Made an exspensive call to pay pal and they said they can't see it but will investigate.

Can't get into my account without filling it in but sure it is a scam.

First off clear your browser temporary files then in a new browser window from your homepage type the address in your browser ie enter paypal.com

It should change to a secure site atarting with https://www.paypal.com/.......

MAKE SURE it is httpS and the address starts as above when the page loads.

If it is not as above your computer could be compromised.

If Paypal can't see the check, it's possible it's malware on your own computer.  In addition to your own security scan, run something like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  Free trial version download here:

Oops!  I run it periodically as I find it picks up certain stuff that WSE doesn't.

ETA: And it's always the first thing I run if my computer starts behaving oddly.

That could be bad news.  There is some malware that will stop you downloading security programs like Malwarebytes.  You could try downloading it in safe mode first.  If that doesn't work, you could try a tool like Rkill.

Did you follow a link in an email to access your Paypal account priot to this problem starting?

Yes getting concerned but will attack it tomorrow.

Just tried to get into pay pal to transfer some money via the normal link on my ebay page.

It is not an email as such it is a page comes up after I have logged into paypal.

It will not let me go into my account and I am not going to answer anything till I get the all clear.........

I tried to download and nothing happened and then noticed a small banner at the top oc the active screen below the task bars which I had to click on to clear the computers own security.

After checking 351000 objects it found not problems, except that window security popped up in the middle having found two severe risks which it then deleted.

My mouse have been jumping about for some time and this has now stopped.

Big thank you for post the link.

Glad it was useful.  I got a trojan about a year ago and it took a combination of MBAM and Rkill to get rid of it (and a lot of expletives!).

My next door neighbour had money removed from her bank account and the only thing she put it down to was a pay pal transaction, luckily she banks on-line and saw her money had been removed and contacted the bank, the crims deposited a check (stolen) then when the found the account worked they made a large withdrawal, as the others have said get your puter checked for spyware/trojans.

Betula, what's the outcome of this?  I was going to say I had the same thing back in November when I logged into Paypal but after reading that you followed a link from an email, I realised not.  Mine was official as it actually was from Paypal.  The scammers are getting so clever with their emails these days that it can be so hard to tell.  Apart from hovering over the link with your mouse - which will give you the email address they're trying to send you to - Paypal will only ever use your full name when emailing.  No dear sir, madam, user, member etc.  Only Dear Betula Bloggs... the full name that you registered with.  I really hope you have managed to sort it out and all your monies are safe.  I've had my Paypal account hacked (several years ago) and it is not a nice thing to go through.  Did get my money reimbursed though :)

Yes sorry should have replied to this, after hearing nothing phoned them again and it is all OK.

A chap called Gavin from Newcastle said they do do this and it will probably never happen again.......so why could they not tell me that in the first place?

I always double check these things because as you say they are so clever now.

Thanks to everybody for suggestions and support :)

Two things you need to know:

1. make sure whatever/whoever is asking you for this information  is genuine, and not a phishing email or  spoof java add on. Basically, ring paypal and speak to a human, believe noithing you read on the pc, it could be fake, and like an art dealer, you need to know how to spot some of the fakes.

2. Understand, even taking the above into account, that paypal, is ruthless, inefficient, uncaring, blind and callous, and not interested in your problems.  If you always log in to paypal on the same pc at the same time, then logging in on a different pc with a different IP address with trigger farud alarm bells, and they will screw your account down tighter than a nuns chastity belt. be aware that to get it unlocked you will be made to jump thru hoops to the point os just short of grovelling to them.  Your Paypal account can be frozen at any time, without advance notice, leaving you without your money for months (if not forever), and there isn't much you can do about it. Paypal have gone to extrodinary legal lengths to make themselves as immune as possible to Uk and EU law.

Another point, Paypal insist you give them a bank account after a while, or they cap you. DO NOT EVER, point them at a bank account with money in with and overdraft facility. There are dozens of horrors stories of paypal raiding peoples accounts and taking hundreds or thousands out. Point them to an empty savings account with no overdraft facility, and only put money in there when you know it needs taking out by them.

Copying paypal  pages as a scam is pernicious and done by a bunch of thieves, but POaypal themselves can be no better.  If you need convincing, google 'paypal problems' or start here   http://www.aboutpaypal.org/

And my final professional advice on malware. No anti-virus gets 100% of all the crap. In fact, no THREE antivirus, spyware, and rootkit killer is 100%, and not even including the other bits you need, which means a startup manager and monitor . In fact i can list you several viruses that are unremovable, and all of which will send your bank details, passwords  and other personal stuff straight back home to russia, roumania, estonia, china or nigeria. And in my vast perosnal and professional experience, any machine that has been compromised by even one of the super viruses is no longer trustworthy to do bankign on. The only solution, and the one that is g'eed to be 100% effective is to format the drive and reinstall everything from scratch.

I have a machine configuration  ive developed over the years i work on. It has some features that make it bomb proof.

1. It has two hard drives. One is a SATA drive of 500Gb, partinioned into 100Gb and 400Gb, and ALL my data is stored on the 400Gb partition.
2. The second drive is on the IDS cable. it is a 160 Gb drive partioned into 100Gb and 60 Gb
3. There is an internal PCI card with 5 USB ports, permanently plugged into one port is a 16Gb USB flash card  physically modified to make it write only.

The machine has windows installed on the small SATA partition abd the 1000gb ide partition, and i can switch which it boots off in the bios setup.

The idea is it works like this. Which ever way i boot, the 100Gb IDE partition and the 100Gb stat partition come up as C and D, depending which one you boot of (comes u pas c , the other as d).  Normally i work on the faster sats drive, but in the event of a problem, i can boot off the ide, and see the windows installtion on the sats drive, and fixx it.

Each bootable drive has a complete installed image saved on the other drive, so i can run the partition imaging soiftware (I use DrioveimgXML) and restore the partition to clean installed in 30 mins. I lose no data doing thai because all the data is on the 400 gb (comes up as E: either way you boot). All the software i might need to fix the boot drives is on the read only usb (comes up as W: no matter how u boot), this includes:

A complete copy of all the hardware drivers, including printer software, scanner software
MSN Messenger installer
Spotmau Power suit
WINRAR
PowerIso
AVG installer
Malwarebytes Installer
Firefox installer
Chrome installer
Sysinternals Process Explorer
File assassin
WMA genuine check program
IE8 installer
MS key finder
Openfiles view
TweakUI powertoy
Nero
Startup inspector
Startup Monitor
Registry Mechanic
SeaTools for DOS
Seatools for Windows.

With this setup, i can fix even an attack by Katusha-B, one of the most lethal, destructive, unstoppable virus you have ever seen. Ive hav encountered it three times, the first tiem it took me totallyk unawares of it, and reduced the machine to rubble in 20 mins (seriously, it totally destroyed the partition).

Ultimately, theres a class of virus you cant get of by any means o na live windows installation, you need to be able to look at the windows partition its infected fro ma third boot, so its not live and being used (and locking files)

I coudl write you a book on how to make yourself virus proof, and how to fight a virus back, its such a vast and specialised subject.

Yes I agree with your first points............I only use an old account that never has that much in it.
