Post by: caroline7758 on January 01, 2012, 16:10:21
Just wondering if anyone has bought from this ebay seller? Looks a good price.

I think they are quite expensive when you consider the postage, plus the fact there are only 50 bulbs.

I would guess you could get around double that amount from shops like Wilkinsons for around the same price.

I paid £2-50 for a 500gm pack from Kings, which usually works out at around 80-100 setts depending upon their size.

My apologies I checked up on the seller and it was here where I saw them being sold 50 bulbs for £1-75 + £2-25 postage so £4 for 50 setts seemed expensive. (8p/set)

But then again £ 2-99 +£2-99 pp for 100 setts is still expensive in my opinion.(6p/sett)

I paid around (3p/sett)

Thanks, TeeGee. Kings are asking £3.65 for 500g this year, plus £1.50 postage, so guess that's about the same (just noticed Kings claim 500g is approx 150 sets so they must be small this year!)

I was a bit disappointed with what Wilko's had available last year (both spuds and onions) but may end up back there this year- or wait for a "P&P free offer from one of the others.

I was at first disappointed with Wilkos spud selection last year, they only had the 3kg bags of a few variates.
However, when I poped into another branch a couple of weeks later, they had a selection of other variaties in 5 tuber bags for 99p.

Maybe they came in later, or different branchs have different ranges, but I often pass different branches so I will be poping in quite a bit.

I got all of my spuds from Wilco's last year, and I'm pretty sure they were in bags of 10 or 12 which suited me fine as I fit in 10 per raised bed. This year I can grow more as the potatoes are going in my long rows side of the plot where I can fit about 15 per row (earlies). I got Charlotte, Rooster, Kestrel and Nicola/Nadine and hope to get them again this year too, all did really well.

Poundland sets aren't bad.  Last year I grew their Setton onions and Golden Gourmet shallots and they were fine.  Not a hugh choice but great value.

Mine came from the 99p shop last year, and did really well.

We usually pay 80p - £1 from our lottie shop for 60-70 bulbs.  Dont know if they will go up this year... they are due in end of Jan.

Although I was pleased with the setts I bought last year from Poundland, I am growing from seed this year as every one of my immediate neighbours on the site had white rot.  Have some stuttgarter (I think) seeds and walla walla if you would like to try.  NB: Seeds sown on the night before Christmas Eve have just come up.

I seem to do a lot better growing from seed, I lose a lot from sets, either through rot or from bolting.
I have got 6 bulbs in pot overwintering in the greenhouse as an experiment but otherwise they will all be from seeds.

Like ^^^ I also started some 23rd Dec, and they are just showing.

I sowed my onion seeds today:Jaune Paille de Vertus' from real seeds. This is a new challenge for me coz I usually use sets but I thought I'd have a try. I intend to use a Lidl work lamp for lighting if its stays as gray as today.
Its got 1,2, or 3 low energy bulbs which should be enough for my small trays so long as I can Heath Robinson the thing in some safe way... ::)

Last year i got my onion sets from 99p stores and they were brilliant, stuttgarter?? something like that.

I'm trying from seed this year (started today), but if that doesn't show any promise I'll go for 99p sets again.
