Now then, how's this for an idea....
Scenario, one we're all familiar with perhaps?.....you do a bitov work with your trowel, handfork or secateurs,etc....put them down to take a back straightening break, go for a P, cuppa T, whatever, then return to the spot. Waste a fruitless hour looking for the tool you know is there somewhere.....
grrrr
Which is why I want a metal detector. Not a high-falutin centuries buried treasure detecting metal detector, just one that'll tell me where my bloomin tools are.
Any ideas,please?
Ta.
;D ;D ;D
I've got ones with orange handles and that seems to help me find them again. But it's gardening gloves I loose all the time. :(
Well, you can always try dowsing for the tools with a magnet on the end of a string, especially as you can get some super-strong magnets these days. Of course that won't help with aluminium tools, but most are steel.
Paint everything pink! Well the tools at least - I always wondered why so many garden tools are green or brown.
tee hee! Mel's come the closest to what I'm thinking of, but I'm still really wondering if any of you with kiddies have ever bought a metal divining kit for them - that works (in inexperienced hands) ::)
Coloured handles don't. I've bought, in the past, hand tools supporting Breast Cancer, so bright fuchsia pink? and they disappear under 6" of leaves even when new and not coated with a bit of onnest dirt, as happens ;) I've also, stickily, painted handles of things, but again they dull.....
Which is why I thought of kiddies' metal diviners.......
PS I've a D-I-L who's a Product Designer and have nagged her for years to come up with something with which one could 'whistle up' mislaid tools, like you can, apparently, locate keys, etc ?
Still waiting....... ;D

We're nearly there, perhaps just a whisker too expensive still. Just mention RFID to her ... ;D
Tee hee...hands up who else had to Google the initials?
Right then! 100 views & no-one's got kiddies/grands who're out there looking for their gramps missing metal-filled false teeth/leg etc......
hmmm...wonder if I'll get a better response asking on Mums-Net p'raps? Worth a try I s'pose....
Orf to investigate.
I may be some time....
you mean something like this?

£1.25 each, cheap enough to put on your hand tools, just whistle and it whistles back.

A cheap metal detector to clip in your knicker elastic. Don't put it down or you will have to buy another one. If it will find a nail it should be up to the job.
Whoops! should have mentioned it would be no good if you are a Goth or a lady of a certain persuasion that has piercings. It would be bleeping all day
I've been trying to locate my Billhook without success on the lotty, I have a feeling it is in the bottom of the compost bin, :)
I am always loosing tools, tis why I stopped buying expensive ones. I have bright handles, but still manange to put them down for them to vanish into thin air. They do sometimes turn up again months later when I am working away, under a shrub, or cutting down a perennial at the end of the season. ;D

Best advice ever! I even wear pink gloves - not lost em yet!
How much are metal detectors these days? May as well buy your veg from harrods if you need to go to that expense!! ???
£22 quid on Amazon. ;D
My mum swears by her set of divining rods and reckons she can find missing items. I've seen her find a leak in a water pipe 5' down. She uses a metal set but I remember her telling me the best one for water is hazel or willow, so metal probably will work best for tools. Can't say I've ever tried in any seriousness but maybe something in it, good luck with your detecting.
what if you lose the metal detector?... :-\

With a skill like that in your family Jayb you would be well to learn from your mum!!
I used to lose them by throwing them into the wheelbarrow with the weeds , thinking I,ll put it in the shed later , only to forget it s there and then tip the lot onto the compost heap ! So now I just leave one hanging on a tall forked stick at about four or five stations around the garden, so they are always to be found easily . Cheap ones mind ..and yes they do get a bit manky but better than buried in the mud eh ?

You need more tools, not a metal detector. I have 3 trowels and 3 secateurs, which is about the right amount to find one without looking too hard. I could be more organised ??? and tidy up every time ??? which would help. As a rule (with exeptions) I don't leave secateurs out, so they will be in the greenhouse or in the shed, but the trowels can be almost anywhere. The tools I don't like and don't use much are always to hand ::)
On the other hand, a metal detector could be great fun .......
While working in an enclosed area on aircraft, the form is to tie a length of string to each tool. So when (not if) you drop it into the depths, you can retreive it. It also helps you ensure you have all tools and not discover a forgotten one from the shadowboard and have to go all the way back to the workplace.. Cheers, Tony.
Thanks all 8)
Right! The prob isn't mine,as such......in my garden plottie and in clients' gardens, I'm (usually) much more organised - got me a Trusty Bukkit, with handles ,not a freebie non-handle one from the CO-OP, my Very First Lottie Love (plug for my fave shop, you notice, hmmmm? much loved and appreciated for Other Stuff also), and count my tools in and out...
No, it's mostly for the Bermuda Triangle of my family's place - large expanse of woodland where tools disappear into the dense carpet of leaves/undergrowth on a regular, and expensive, basis. Apart from secateurs, etc., tree loppers and extended handle tree loppers, even, have disappeared.
So, That's why I thought of metal diviners at an affordable cost, but want to know if they actually work at locating stuff not actually buried for centuries treasure.
I'd imagine tying coloured helium balloons to each tool is going a bit too far?....
I'm with Galina on this one. I also have lots of trowels and little forks that I have collected over the years. 2 secateurs that I put in my pocket in between using them. I buy the bright orange and purple gloves from Wilkies and if I do happen to take them off then I put them I put them on top of canes or on the handles of my wheelbarrow.Even so I still lose some of them.
