Title: Technical Question.
Post by: telboy on December 03, 2011, 17:29:16
I dropped one of my max./min. thermometers a couple of days ago. It didn't break, but the mercury is - with varying bits in both tubes' measuring areas. I've tried a strong magnet to no avail. Which is the best way to join up the bits, freezing it or carefully using boiling water?

Tie it to a bit of string and give it a good swingaround.

I have fixed one with boiling water, but it did not last long, just as the last drop of liquid had joined up it then exsploded spraying blue dye everywhere.
That was an alcohol one, you don't want to do that with mercury.

I find just holding it at arms length and swinging it in a big arc is often enough, but if not, then what Ace said.
