Title: Where did they go?
Post by: Aden Roller on November 04, 2011, 02:35:28
This evening I asked Mrs Roller where the radiators and chrome towel rail had gone. Then it dawned that the plumber who had fitted the new larger ones had taken them with him when he left!  :o

We hadn't agreed that he would take them and he didn't mention it at all when he said good-bye. Quite a surprise. He left behind the old WC pan as well as the wash-basin.

I rather thought I would be selling them second hand to recoup some of the costs especially as they weren't very old, were in first class condition and fitted with trvs. The chrome towel rail was lovely but just didn't give off enough heat.  :(

What would you do?   ???

Phone the plumber and request he returns the radiators.

if no joy, phone the police to report theft of your goods ( make it clear that this is what you'll do if he doesn't return them straight away )

Put it in writing and hand deliver.  Be polite and say it must have been a mistake.  Give a time limit.   Also look on ebay and estimate the value.  He may have already past them on.

He was off on a Gas Safe Course today - I'm wondering if the deal might already be done! Sold on.  :(

I sent a text but not sure he would have his work phone on as he wasn't working. I'll wait until he returns on Monday morning and we will discuss it then.

Still very disappointed as, so far, his work and care have been first class.

Years ago I saw mine sell my bath at the front of my house. :o

This had not been agreed but as I had three kids and desperate to get the new bathroom in I decided to turn a blind eye but never used him again.

I would be a lot more savvy these days but we live and learn :)

It just didn't occur to me that the chap would think they were his to wander off with.  :o Naive or what?

No response to my text.

You never know: maybe he thought he was doing you a favour? (or maybe I'm being just too naive as well!!) Good luck with getting them back though or getting compensation.

I think that until recently it was just commonplace for workmen to take everything away, and probably part of the deal.
It's only as we've all got a bit more fiscally aware and the value of scrap metal has gone up that it's become worth bothering.
We had a new drive this year and the old manhole was whisked away by Mr PKL before the workmen even got a look in ;D, but there again we're dedicated skip grovellers :o

Your fault Chap by not telling the lad that you wanted to retain the old rad towel rail, if he had left it you would be moaning that he had not cleaned up after him, theres no way of satisfying people like you ;),

Thanks for that.........but he didn't clean up and there was no mention of him taking anything. There's a huge heap left... WC, wash-basin, shower tray, door and side panel.

We've just had our bathroom done and they were fab.
But Aden Roller we had it done 5yrs ago by absolute cowboys so we've experienced two sides of the coin.
Why should expecting honesty be a problem ?
Mr. Smith the guy that treated us badly was a husband of a friend who we fed and treated well ,paid WELL over the odds in cash- his demand. Sadly we were too polite/scared to argue.
But delighted to have found a decent local company who when we said we would dispose of the bath (freecycle) and rubbish-the tip adjusted our invoice accordingly i.e. they reduced the price  :)
result a lovely bathroom and we'll tell anyone who'll listen what a fab company fitted it !

Macmac I'm pleased to hear your bathroom re-fit went well the 2nd time around. Our first one, two years ago in our own home, was also just what we wanted.

This time round the plumbing job is for my 90+ year old parents. Every penny counts so a small return from selling 2nd hand radiators would have been useful to help pay for new curtains in their little bungalow. I'm their full-time carer on £50 a week so money is not something we can waste or flash around.

We're pleased with the work the plumber has done - 1st class. We're just disappointed that the, in all other respects, excellent communication and customer care didn't go as far as asking or explaining what he intended doing with our property.

But our Mr Smith on here is very wrong "People like me" just expect to be treated decently. We would not have moaned that he'd left us with the remains of the bathroom and central heating system as we had not asked him to remove it nor had he said he was going to.

Is it too much to expect Mr Smith - common decency?

Have you called him up to ask him for it back yet?

Nothing wrong with expecting honesty but I know you are not always going to get it.

I was too daft in those days to know a metal claw foot bath was worth money.

Too daft to know the guy who gave me a cheque for my old car gave me a cheque of the bouncing variety ::)

Older and wiser............

Oh yes, that plumber left a leak under the new bath and me kitchen ceiling fell in.

Pleased to say I have had great wokmen in latter years LOL

I sent a text on Friday afternoon.  ::)

I decided that, as he was at his Gas Safe refresher course taking a practical and theoretical exam, I wouldn't disturb him with the "problem" until he'd finished.

As it wasn't a working day I imagine his work mobile is turned off.
