So in Ireland wearing a poppy is more of a political statement than solely honoring veterans?

It has nothing to do with Ireland as such

The company is Midland based .

I would never have shopped with them again if they kept that up.

To all those who object to wearing a poppy I ask you one question. What do you think life would have been like under the Nazi Jack boot.Would it have been wear your swastika with pride?

This is just another example of diluting our culture and heritage.

This country needs a leader who will stand up for us. Someone who is leading by example is the female Australian Prime Minister who made the following points in a speach;

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

My GUESS is that Poundland have a ban on wearing ANY type of badge, for any organization.
This takes the pressure off their mangers to decide what can/ cannot be worn by the staff.
On this occasion the badge was a Poppy which many people in this country wear with pride- and therefore is causing offence to a lot of people and justifiably.  However I suspect that they were sent home for wearing a badge that happened to be a Poppy rather than actually wearing a Poppy.
If you feel its wrong - keep your Pounds out of Poundland.

(I never went back to a well known electrical firm when an employee who got electric shock when he was told by management to do soemthing unsafe, then they sacked him)

I would like to think that Poundland will now put their money where their mouth is & publicly give a hefty donation to the Poppy Appeal .........but I'm not holding my breath!

No Australian Prime Minister ever gave that speech.  It's a cobbled-together internet urban myth.  Hoaxslayer de-bunks it here:

It's also mentioned on Snopes in the context of an American version:

I think what added fuel to the fire regarding Poundlands alleged uniform rules is how the staff are allowed to wear Halloween/Christmas/Valentines etc hats n trinkets if they want to, to join in the spirit of the occasion (the spirit, geddit?) but were then told no for poppies.  Makes no sense, that.

anyway, all of the Aussies and Americans who are so 'proud of their country' should remember that they are invaders, as both the  Aboriginal the Red Indian peoples were there first, and they certainly give them no respect. Please don't hold up American and Australian values as a beacon!!

That's an extraordinarily perilous argument in the context, since in neither case were the early settlers "invaders" in any normally understood sense.  Indeed, we would nowadays call the Pilgrim Fathers refugees or, to use the more fashionable expression, "asylum seekers".

Following your argument, it would be easy to conclude that all immigrants were "invaders", which is, I suspect, the opposite of the point that you want to make.

I can't defend America's treatment of Indians in the past. I'd imagine England can't defend sending its convicts to Australia and Georgia either. I also can't defend American Indians who enslaved other American Indians and whites. And blacks enslaving blacks in Africa. In short, where one finds people, one finds sin.

The best we can do with the mess is move on and try to improve the lot of others. <she now gets down from soapbox>

Except that "asylum seekers" don't go and kill all the inhabitants of the lands where they have sought refuge!  The British arriving in Australia were at first a convenient way to get rid of unwanted prisoners, and then a good excuse to colonize a new bit of land, especially as the "locals" proved to be reasonably peaceful and quite easily manipulated or massacred in some cases (and so susceptible to dying from all those nasty imported diseases). And I say that as a white Australian! (end of rant)

I don't really see what that has to do with poppy day anyway, which is a cultural tradition. I think the Poundland thing seems to be more bureaucracy gone mad, rather than a deliberate slight on the memories of war veterans...
