Title: Tomatoes splitting
Post by: themauler on October 19, 2011, 22:07:00
Can anyone tell me why my tomatoes have been splitting this year. Is it because of the weather? They have got to the stage where they are nearly ripe, but then just split.

Is that irregular watering, too much, too little or a mixture of everything?

Letting them get too dry, then watering not a good idea

I agree with the above posts. There are many ways you can avoid this happening other than regular watering. If you are planting in a greenhouse bed and not in growbags then you can soak the soil completely and mulch the surface so that will reatain moisture. If you are using growbags then a half of a pop bottle screw cap end down for each plant will be able to hold enough water for a day or two to keep tomatoes happy also you can put your tomato feed in the pop bottle waterers also.

Just a few ideas  :)

It's as simple as that - definitely agree. Dry then water.  :(

Just keep them moist and you should avoid it next year.

If you can rig automatic watering then it is your very good friend..... every day they get watered (if in a greenhouse) then you feed them once or twice a week....

The variety of the tomatoes is also a factor, Sungold are notorious for splitting easily, one of the reasons I stopped growing them as so many got wasted by exploding....  ::)
