Title: raspberries
Post by: queenbee on October 18, 2011, 23:43:03
Could not believe my eyes, My early raspberries which fruit in June and July have got green fruits on next years shoots. I have grown them for over 20 years and I have never known this. If we do not get any frost I shall be eating fresh (all but a few) raspberries in early November. Anyone else seen this before?

I don't grow Summer ones... but it's not unusual for Autumn Bliss to be still producing..  :-X

I have prevoiusly seen just the occasional raspberry shoot give us October flowers but this year ALL of mine without exception are flowering away profusely in company with four apple trees.

I picked raspberries this week! They are past their best though to be honest.
They are Heritage but I never know if they are summer or autumn croppers, to me they are both as I have been getting fruit on them since July!!!! Last year I chopped them down in Winter when they were all dead and woody, doesn't seem to have done them harm.

Yes I've had raspberries in December....but not last year! i've got lots coming on but if we have a frost it will all be over. Glen Moy also carries on in autumn even though it's a summer variety.

We were picking our first autumn Bliss at the end of May this year (admittedly in SW France).  they cropped really well all summer, and then slowed down.  In August I made the effort to cut down all the canes that looked as if they had finished, as there were plenty more growing up.  Perhaps because we have had the most glorious Indian summer weather for about 5 weeks (first rain for ages all day today!) we have been picking a magnificent crop of perfect and large raspberries for a couple of weeks now, better than in the summer.  We are making the most of them! There are loads more to come,  but it may be frosty soon. I do love raspberries!

One of my summer fruiting raspberry canes has flower buds on it too.

Antipodes, I have Heritage and they are an Autumn variety.
