Title: Lilies
Post by: tricia on October 12, 2011, 23:47:52
I bought a pot of growing lilies from Lidl a couple of weeks ago. For a while nothing happened, then a some of the buds fell off and then some of the buds started to swell and change colour. Now quite a few of the buds have opened and the perfume is lovely. My question is - what should  I do with the plant when it has finished flowering? I'd hate to have to throw it on the compost heap!

ease off watering but continue feeding. let the soil dry out then the bulbs can be stored over winter and you can repot for indoor floweing next year or I plant them out in the garden, the foliage will die down after frost and most will flower next year, some for many years depending on species

but when outdoors keep an eye out for Lily Beetle (bright red) and their grubs (look like bits of soil on the underside of the leaf but it's a grub covered in it's own poo as camoflage) they'll quickly eat the lot!

hope that helps

Thank you Linnea. I am so NOT into growing flowers I hadn't even realised that lilies have bulbs! Such an ignoramus  :-[.
