Guy Gibson VC, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar, one of the finest pilots of WW2, died when he crashed over Holland in September 1944.
New research has shown in fact Gibson was shot down by friendly fire from a Lancaster, by an air gunner called Bernard McCormack. McCormack mistook the tail of Gibsons Mosquito for a Junkers JU88.
Fortunately Mr McCormack died in 1992, and wont have to suffer the humiliation of going down in history as the man who shot down one of the greatest pilots of WW2, apart from being on the same side as he.
