Title: sunflower head
Post by: claybasket on October 05, 2011, 06:20:58
A sunflower grew in or potato bed don't know were it came form, we didn't have the heart to pull it out,so we watered it and fed it with everything else!wow    :o it grew to 14ft! the stem was 10in round and the head nearly 22ins across, sadly we had to take the seed head of last week, it was full of ripe seeds it was bending over so much with the  weight we thought it would snap in two,the head is now propped up on the bird table not sure whats going to eat it?

Squirrels... if you have them... we wedge ours into the fence to stop them dragging whole heads away. Then mice/rats... If you want to make sure some birds get some you will need to break them out and put them in a feeder...  :-X

There were lots of sunflowers on my plot this year- I was advised to take the heads off and dry them so do not just go mouldy and drop off. that way the birds get the advantage for longer.

Yes we bring in the biggest head and the tallest plant "head" to dry and stop the critters...  :)
