Just made up three pints of sauce from my San Marzano toms.. ;D
Picked at the weekend and roasted with garlic - they make a really rich thick sauce.
It's a pity they are so late as there is double the amount on the plants - still green.
Next year I try something earlier but these will be hard to beat for a sauce tom..
I'm hoping the next few sunny days will help with the ripening of my San Marzanos and then I'll be sauce making too. Good to hear they're good for that. Also, so pleased they didn't get hit by blight!
I have been putting my green toms in a cadboard box with a couple of apples and bananas, cover loosely with newspaper and leave the top of the box open.
They have been ripening well :)
I've been very lucky with blight this year. Despite it hitting other plots hard mine seem to be standing well. Picking toms into october is a rare event on our site. Might have to do the same thing betula but I'm holding on to see if this weather this week will help.
I did panic a bit.I saw some brown marks on some of my lottie toms and thought Blight.I picked loads of them off the plants but when I went back a few days later the bush was quite healthy.
Now got several more green ones................maybe this lovely sunshine we have been promised will do the job.
I still have San Marz on the plants... blight free and ripening well with this good weather... :)
San Marzano is a good tom and I grow a few myself, but Heinz knocks it into a cocked hat.... almost all flesh, no seeds on beefsteak sized tomatoes and they have the taste of Heinz ketchup/soup.....
Just picked another 3lbs of San Marzano this evening...
and the Auntie Madge are still going strong!
:)
One of mine is nearly red.Perhaps I can use the sauce on a ritz cracker.
