Title: Green Manure - Hungarian Grazing Rye
Post by: Dandytown on September 23, 2011, 11:51:07
Maybe I have put this in the wrong place but maybe not as its considered ground prep for the edible stuff.  Just sharing some info.

I have two 500 sqaure foot patches (for next years giant pumpkins) and am growing an overwintering crop of grazing rye (forage rye) but have been 'uming and ahring' for some time over where best to source it as I need quite a bit.

When I google I come up with these two as the cheapest

http://www.thegrassseedstore.co.uk/100-winter-green-manure-seed-p-198.html
2kg for £14.40  (free delivery) Nb. this is a minimum order!

http://www.molesseeds.co.uk/cgi-bin/ca000002.pl?ACTION=SHOWCART
2.5kg for £13.00 (inc delivery)  Nb. product is £7.35, remainder is delivery

I am going to go with moleseeds.  Had to scan down a few pages to find them.

Sowing rate is 10-25g m2 so 2.5 kg will at a minimum cover 100m2 or about 1000 square foot.

Take a look at part of next years patch that was treated with green manure in August.

I thought of using grazing rye but usually manage to find a patch of wheat spillage somewhere.  Carry a dustpan and brush around.   I got half a bucket full this year.  I would want a whole sack for £14.

Be careful with Grazing Ryes... then can inhibit seed germination the year after use...  :-X

Thanks Saddad but as a result of having so many weeds coming up in spring I tend to sow everything in pots so that I can differentiate between weed and plant.

two of my allotment neighbours had a horrible time getting the grazing rye dug in. It was really hard work and put me off. Phacelia and mustard are easy though, mustard is a brassica so goes in a rotation. Rest of the time I am using compost, shredded card and shredded paper, all covered with weed fabric
