Title: Hedgehog Pie
Post by: Mr Smith on September 22, 2011, 18:47:34
A while back when coursing and hunting with dogs was legal a couple of lads I came across at one of these events called themselves 'Travelling folk', I asked was it correct that they ate Hedgehogs and did they wash in puddles, to both questions they answered 'yes', it was actually a tongue in cheek question and for my cheek I was expecting a bit of a punch up (we had been drinking most of the morning), they then gave me a rough guide to how they baked Hedgehogs on their campfires and covered the Hedgehog in mud or better still clay, I must confess that I have never tried Hedgehog, have any of you tried this Travellers delicacy

I suppose if I was starving in the true sense of the word I would eat them.I am fond of hedgehogs though so hope that never happens.

The thought of eating hedgehogs is most upsetting.  We used to have lots in the garden you could hear them snuffling about at night.  But hardly see them now.   I had thought they were now protected.

They have been protected since 2007 but i have eaten them baked in mud well before that time. it was gutted stuffed with fresh hay and wrapped in thick mud  and then place in a wee pit with hot wood embers at the bottom and then topped with more hot embers and a fire built on top about and hour and a half later we unearthed the the cooked hedgehog and broke open the mud.
most of the spines stayed in the mud as it was broke off, it was quite a strange taste and the meat was slightly grey and a bit dry but if push came to shove you could live on it.

No I do not think I would eat hedghog, but Squirrel is quite tasty, (Grey I hasten to add).
Apparently most people think it tastes like chicken but I thought it more like pork.

I have just been looking at several internet sites on Hedgehog conservation and protection, and do you know that Essex is very low in numbers for Hedgehogs,  ;)
