Title: The bad news and the good news
Post by: betula on September 22, 2011, 13:25:55
Not dramatic enough for the listening post but just had the phone call off the garage.Failed MOT and £500 estimate :(

Husband no good at this stuff so phoned my son who will not only do the work for me but lend me his spare 4by4 or whatever we call them.

Bad news is it is Automatic............not drove one of those since I had a Ford Granada estate.......yes really that long ago :o

Thank God for my lovely son who still loves his Mum LOL :)

Another lucky Mum (like me) who has a great son. I also have a Grandson who is a qualified mechanic and has kept my cars on the road for the past 10 years. Re Automatic.. I first drove one in the mid 70's when the husband bought a Jag, he thought an automatic would have better resale value. Haven't driven a manual since then I love them, don't miss all that changing gear when you are in a traffic jam lol.

Aren't they brilliant ;D
I have 3 wonderful children , an amazing son in law and a lovely daughter in law. SIL is a master mechanic, fixes the car, son 1 is a computer programmer, fixes the computers, son 2 feeds us when he comes home (chef) and my daughter is a nurse and keeps an eye on our health, Dil spoils us rotten when we visit. plus, they have given us 4 beautiful grandchildren between them  ;D
BTW, our car is an automatic and it's very easy to drive as soon as you can forget there's no clutch pedal :)

Ive always done my own repairs, but in the last few years im getting so I cant be arsed to roll about under cars anymore. Plus ofc, theres less and  less you can actually fix or adjust on a car engine, they are now virtually sealed boxes  and the only way to fiddle is to plug in a computer workstation and do what it says.

I've just changed my car from an automatic.

It is amazing how often I stalled when coming to a halt when i first changed back to manual !

I gave up my car and got a bike and my lovely son pumps up the tyres for me, but he won't put me on his insurance to drive his car, but I think he drives too fast, and I used to drive too slow, but do I care.  Happy walking and have got my lovely free bus/train/tube pass.  Cars are a pain for parking in London and expensive on petrol, tax whatever.

After years of driving an automatic i am now up in the Spanish mountains in a tiny little manual Renault. Should have been practising hill starts..stalling on tiny one lane mountain paths made of gravel with a hundred foot drop sharpens the mind!
