Hi, only had an allotment since end of may this year 2011. I've had trouble with plants getting established, cause of wind on the allotment. What ideas can you all help me with, to combat this problem?
Cloches around young plants. Sowing seeds in the ground gives you a stronger plant than seedlings grown at home then taken to plant out. Growing them on well before plant out if started off in pots or trays.
Brassicas can be earthed up to stop wind rock.
If really bad consider stakes with debris netting to protect from the prevailing wind.
Ask what other plot holders do on your site.
Wooden trellis like this might help http://www.fountaintimber.co.uk/trellis/trellis/norman-trellis.html
Have read that it is better to have a semi-permeable windbreak than a solid one
Debris netting looks like a good idea pumpkinlover. http://www.tarpaflex.co.uk/acatalog/Debris_Netting.html
Most of the allotment holders complain bout the wind. We are just finding out because its a new site.
Plot neightbour uses debris netting, only half -height though....
