Title: Co-incidence
Post by: lavenderlux on September 09, 2011, 08:35:03
Younger grandson, "Toby W" started school this week.   In the same class of 30 children there's another Toby whose surname starts with "W" -  they also share the same birth date!

It sounds as if he already found a best friend  :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem

In probability theory, the birthday problem or birthday paradox pertains to the probability that, in a set of n randomly chosen people, some pair of them will have the same birthday. By the pigeonhole principle, the probability reaches 100% when the number of people reaches 366 (excluding February 29 births). However, 99% probability is reached with just 57 people, and 50% probability with 23 people.

Strange as it seems, the birthday paradox says that in a room of 23 people there is a 50% chance that two people will share the same birthday. If you google it you can see the maths. Even so, it is still difficult to believe, even more so  when you add Toby and W!!

I've just read about a couple here in Devon who have the same birthday - and their first child was born - a week late - also on their birthday! At least Dad will never be able to forget his wife's or his son's birthday!
