Very rampant - I assume I cut back the leaders by at least a third??
yes, I have to cut mine back several times over the season. However, I like to leave some long canes as a permenent framework and cut back all laterals from those canes v.hard in February.
According to the BBC = Madame Alfred Carrier (http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/3393.shtml) ;)
I foolishly put one up an arch with an Etoille d'Holland and am forever cutting them back... ::)
No, Aden - CARRIERE!!
But back to the point - I didn't think Alfred was a Girl!!
Mine is extremely rampant and forms a mutually appreciated tall wavy barrier between me and our neighbours, but occasionally I cut it right back to the "trunks" over the winter to the point at which it looks as if I have killed it; but in the spring it bounds up again.

e (http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/3393.shtml) and the spelling I used matches the thread title.
But thank you for your pointer. ;)

Ah, it's the old-fashioned way of calling a married woman by both her husband's first and surname. My mother-in-law still addresses letters like that.
Miss Jane Smith becomes Mrs James Bloggs. Presumably the French had the same custom, it is an old rose.
Mme Alfred is one of my top roses of all time. Heavenly scent, which floats a long distance in the air.
I planted one on a large arch near the kitchen door to the garden in a previous house. My daughter, now 17, born in May, lay in her pram under Mme Alfred's blooms smiling, awake and contented for hours, whilst I got on with jobs indoors. I used to tie balloons and other bright toys to the bars of the arch for her to look at. Happy memories, which I hope have lingered in some sub-conscious way for her as well.
Morris ...that's lovely! :)
