Has anyone else grown raspberries from supermarket fruit seeds. I sowed some last year from august bought fruit on the assumption that it would also produce fruit in August.
So this year got a very small crop of berries. One plant out of about 100 had a very nice fruit. So my question is: is 1 in 100 a good return and I should count myself blessed and dig up the rest, or do you think that the other plants may produce a worth while crop and so justify waiting another year for a result. They were really wee plants so planted far too close so its a bit of a jungle now.
That is something I haven't done..1 out of 100 sounds like lucky dip to me.
But..I'm not surprised of the result neither..after all raspberries are pollinated by bees..so there is plenty of opportunity for mix parentage. Suppose that is why raspberries are usually propagated from plant material.
You won't get true result for another few years yet...and after couple of more years you are able to pick your favourite and take new shoots from that to grow more plants.
You never know..you might have grown for yourself some nice crossbreed raspberries that may not be like the original berries but even better.. ;) Time will tell..
Well, I can't be much help, but I have a raspberry plant in the garden that's presumably been sown by a bird, if you know what I mean, and after two years it's pretty small and is yet to produce any fruit. Since many perennial fruit bushes take years to come into fruit, I wasn't worried yet, and am actually pretty surprised you got a berry in the first year. I would suggest to thin out the plants and give the remaining ones another year at least.
Big big mistake. I meant strawberries. Sorry
Hi - I am attempting to grow strawberry plants from bought seed, Temptation and Sarian from the 50p bins. But you don't get many seeds in a packet and the germination rate isn't that great.
There is a video from Claire of Claire's Allotment on YouTube where she talks about it and she has 5 packs of seed to sow. Even at 50p you might need 10 packs to get 100 plants.
Just sown mine and although the Temptation packet says that you should get fruit the first year after an Autumn sowing, I am not getting my hopes up. So although I know absolutely nothing about this, I'd say you've got to wait til the second season to know what is really going on.
Could you take out every other one to give them a bit more space? - you might be able to salvage the ones you extract and re-pot.
Ah...strawberries.. ;D Well I've sown some..but they've always been 'seed packet' ones..not from fruit..part from alpines. But yes, same thing as with raspberries..they need to be much more established before you see the true potential. Even with runners their best crop is not until year 2.
Actually I just ordered some strawberry seeds. In Uk there seem to be very little varieties available as seeds..so I ordered some from Seemnemaailm..see 'seed shopping sites'.. ;) ;D ::)
