Title: ugly bug ball ?

down at the allotment i found a cater pillar 3 to 4 inches long about the thickness of my thumb it had a bulbous head  which had a face on it  and as was i  trying to pick it up it started to thrash about  ,uck, i have never saw like it before can anyone tell what moth it belongs too  if moth?

It sounds a bit like the elephant hawk moth larva I found last Saturday.

thanks Ceres for doing that  . i was trying to do two things at once and not concentrating and yes it does look like a elephant moth caterpillar now i know what it is i am not so weary of it Lol  i thought it was something out of a science fiction film at first  ;D
