Title: Loft Ladders any help appreciated
Post by: Digeroo on September 02, 2011, 10:02:16
We need a new loft ladder but I find our current one a bit of a problem since there is nothing to hold onto for the first few steps coming down.

Can anyone please recommend a loft ladder which continues for a short distance into the loft or has some kind of hand rail into the roof ie above the ceiling level.

Many thanks.

I thought that I'd seen a Youngman loft ladder which extended into the loft, but their website shows that it's only by a couple of feet or so, which probably isn't as much as you need.

What about this: http://www.loftshop.co.uk/products_detail.asp?catID=4&typeID=14&pID=89

If you're at all handy, you could make one yourself for very little money.

Or you coiuld concoct yourself some kind of handle to the side of the loft opening.

We had this in our last property ,that had a great loft space but needed that grip as you haul yourself in and come down.

I am not exactly skinny jinny and with feet problems I am very worried about going down the ladder.  Up is fine, but I dare not go up in case I cannot get down again. :o

OH has soon having knee op so he will be in the same position.

Actually a couple of feet may be enough.   Our present system stops more or less at floor level of the loft.

Thanks for the link

I got a B&Q one years ago that has a handrail exactly as described.

But I am still not actually clear and the pics on the web sites are also not clear as to whether the handrails extend into the loft space.

This look like ours, unless they have changed the design the handrail goes up above the top of the ladder by about twelve inches.

So you have to balance on the top rung at the same time as bending down to hold onto the handrail and then step down onto the next rung.  :o :o  I think I am past my sell by date for that kind of thing. ;D
