Title: Royal Wootton Bassett
Post by: SamLouise on August 31, 2011, 23:38:05
I know many of us have differing opinions on our soldiers being at war but I'd just like to say that I watched live on the news earlier this evening the ceremony to mark the end of military repatriations at Wootton Bassett and I shed a few tears myself.

The people there have been nothing short of wonderful (http://www.womenscouncil.org.uk/images/unionjack.gif)

As I've said, we all have different opinions but I'd really appreciate it if this thread didn't get swallowed up with political arguing, if that's ok, please? :) I'm not talking as a mod but rather a request from a fellow member? Thank you  :) x

Yes i watched that also very moving. I am sure that each & every relative appreciated what WOOTON BASSETT did they showed respect to every one of our soldiers who were repatriated.  Very proud of them.
Only wish the never had to do what they did, bless them all.

I am not sure what is going to happen when they get transfered back to Brize Norton.  There were no great ceremonies before when they arrived.   Carterton just does not have the architectural attractiveness to provide the same sense of occassion.  Wootton Bassett has a lovely old wide main street with ancient moot hall.  Carterton is ........ utilitarian and apart from anything full of speed bumps.   Seems they also fly in on a Thursday which clashes with market day.   Which was not a problem in WBassett since their day was Tuesday.  It seems too much to change the day of the incoming flights.

It was very moving, I shed a few tears too. What a pity other grieving families won't experience that sense of occasion for there loved ones.

On the news last night they said it a decision had already been agreed that no parade of any sorts would take place through Carterton.

Wootton Bassett is closeby so any repatriations always appeared on our local news.Despite their frequency I was never failed to be moved, often to tears by the quiet dignity of the people who I believe represented those of us who couldn't attend. For me it was not about the politics of war rather decent people honouring sons/daughters,grandsons/granddaughters, fathers/mothers who lost their lives in conflict.
I wonder if perhaps they could mark a day out annually when people could gather there ?
