I you would have wheelbarrow full..or two, three?..of pears, what would you do with them?
I've been invited to pick all pears from couple trees that are not wanted by the allotment holder.
Now, of course I could only take some more sensible amount..but he wants me to clear the trees.. :o
This year there seem to be pears and apples everywhere...and yes..my own trees have plenty too.. ::)
But the temptation of being greedy is there and now I'm just baffled what to do with the lot ???
Could you sell some of them & raise some money for your lotty association. What sort are they BTW?
Puree, freeze and use them in the wonderful muffin recipe's that is ongoing on allotments for all at this moment. I am going to try rhubarb muffins I will also try to make them with some of the 6 lbs plums that some unknown left on my doorstep a couple of days ago. I have already made 5 jars of plum jam.
Did belgian bottled pears a couple of years ago which was very yummy & very easy. Think it might be in one of my cook books. Let me know if you want me to have a rummage around & find it.
Spiced pear relish, good with meats:
2 kg pears after peeling, cutting into quarters and coring
2 kg sugar
1 litre good malt vinegar
10 grammes allspice
10 grammes ginger
Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar on a low heat, add the spices, bring to the boil, add the pears and bring up to the boil again then reduce the heat and simmer slowly for several hours on a very low heat in a thick bottomed pan until the pear pieces are transparent and the syrup is thick. Makes only about 3 to 4 pound jars so is a good way of using lots of pears up.
Ahhh...my trouble is that I don't bake that much..and I TRY ::) to keep that sort of stuff in minimum from my diet... :-\
I don't know what sort of they are Janet...they are old trees and names have long ago forgotten...but what I know from previous years that I have some..they don't store and need to be eaten or processed.
As for selling them...not much a opportunity for that not that chap would be happy about it..I know..he wanted to give them for me.. ::)..so nice of him.. ;D
Anyway..I'll be in pear diet for a while..
Bottled pears sound nice.. ;)
I was wondering if some could be done in rumtopf-style (mind the spelling but something like that)..stored in booze and sugar... :P ;D ;D..it would be lovely with icecream.. :P
How would go about it?
Something to go with ice cream, mmmmmmmm. Sounds good & would make a lovely change to ice cream only.
I used to love pears with Brie cheese.
We stew lots of ours in cider and cinnamon with just a bit of swetener, nice with diabetic ice cream or in a boozy trifle :)
Ahh..just noticed Chriscross mentioning the rumtopf..... ;D
...but I don't know if pears would take it or would they 'disolve' into mush? :-\
..unless they are processed when still hard.... :-\
....anybody.. ???
That still leave couple of barrow fulls of pears to use for something else..or they think in local bargain booze that I'm serious booze user... :-X ;D
;D So now I need to add into my shopping list some cider as well.. :o ::) ;D ;D...I'm really in trouble now.. ;D
I make apple and cinnamon sauce with brown sugar..but your pear sauce sounds good too...hmm...yum..
Just googled pear chutney, ginger & pear sounds good but I doubt you will have time to make chutney ATM.
Yes..I found the chutney recipe.. ;)
I think I have to find some time.. ::)..AND..I found this..tickled my fancy..

I've got couple BIG glass 'sweet jars'..and few other large containers.
Now I just have go and do a bit of shopping like a good old 'alchie'.. ;D..I'll start with "5 bottles of Rum please".. ;) ;D
Morgan spiced rum is on offer. Litre bottle £13 at Tescos 8). Would that do for your romtopt (sp) thingy ;) ;D.
;D..should do.. ;)..thank you.
I mean business now..just did some internet shopping and invested into good lot of kilner jars..with screw tops and spare seals..just like Jeannine has recommended.. ;)
And bought some 'ordinary' jam jars too..in case I really feel like going for it and making some give away gifts.. ;D
Purse feels quite a bit lighter.. ::)
Now I have to sort my honey and soon.. ::)
PAAARTY IS ON!! ;D ...just had first taste of my pears that I 'pickled' with rum and sugar.. :-X ;D..pears could have been slightly less ripe for it..too much rum and not enough sugar.. ;D ;D..but they still taste good. Now what an earth am I going to do with all that rum after the pears..there is going to be 'tons' of left over... ::)
Rum 'pickled' liver..cirrhosis.. :-X ;D
Rum flavoured custard..rum sauce..rum marinated something else..
Oh, and I have sneeky taste of my damson gin too....OHHHHHHHH...YUM!
Sounds great ;D ;D ;D
Yes yes I can just get a taste coming over the net!!
Now what an earth am I going to do with all that rum after the pears
Well..we had some pears with ice cream today...YUMMY..and now that there is some space in jar and with all that rum..I poured loads of raisins in there...once they swell up..not only they turn the rum sweeter..but having rum and raisins with ice cream is going to DOUBLE YUMMY.. ;D..it is not my brain that is working..but greedy mouth that is telling what it wants.. ;D ;D
I can see trip to ice cream 'factory' in agenda...and soon.. ;D..I'm going to stuff freezer full of Smiths best dairy ice cream..and may the Christmas be merry.. ;D
Sounds as if you've got your xmas pressy list sorted. Apricots, prunes and all dried fruit go well in booze. A pretty ribbon and its done. Cheers;D
