Title: butternutsquash first aid
Post by: donnythistle on August 27, 2011, 20:08:43
I have only 2 squash growing from my 4 plants (loads of buds but not opening into flowers) but one has a split in the stem which i fear will snap off completely or not feed the squash.  Is there anything i can do to strengthen this.

Split stem?

You could try wrapping some electrical tape around the stem. (Anything else might not stand the damp). The tape may help keep the plant going long enough for the fruit to finish growing and ripen.
Here's wishing you luck.

Mine aren't doing well this year - a big disappointment as we eat a lot of them. Last year I had enough to keep us going through until after December. This year I dare not look too closely but there are few.  :(
