This happened to one of my trees once, and at this time of year too. I discovered that I'd left a tie halfway up the trunk, and as the trunk had grown fatter, the tie had started to bite into it. I'd strangled the poor thing.

The loss of trees in the Swindon even made the papers it as been so bad.  All due to the dry spring and little rain in the following months.  We are on clay and I've lost a lovely laburnum and cherry.  I was told its due to being on clay as the roots don't sink their roots so deep.  As they where both at least 15 years old it didn't even occur to me that they where in any danger, just gutted.

How old is it? I lost a three-year-old plum last time we had a drought. Its replacement is flourishing, but a lot of the hazels on the site are turning yellow. Give it a couple of gallons of water a day and hope for the best.
