so is that a grass snake?
I think so.
Yes a beauty the yellow stripe at the back of the head and the black stripes at the side are the clues to identifying a grand grass snake :)
The males seem to be much smaller and almost black
Awwww Wow!!! Fantastic!!! ;D
good photo- are you going to enter in the competition?
Will enter the comp but not with this pic.
This was not an easy pic to get. I have so many picture of just compost. You just have to take the top off the bin the click and hope.
You are sooo lucky to have grass snakes on the plot.
Certainly much nicer than rats in the compost! :o
Now thats wildlife.
A great picture :)
wow well captured, yes she is lovely!
Well done to catch her, they're so quick! She's beautiful. ;D
What a beauty ;D
It is very interesting to look at the pic the level of the compost is now only about half way up the bin. Seen up to four of them.
A way of identifying the grass snake as opposed to the adder is the grass snake has round glassy eyes and the adder has slits this is a quicker way of knowing than the usual V shape at the back of the head as some adders are a bit dark. The picture is wonderful and I too envy you. Manchester is so far away from this sort of thing.
When you meet a grass snake, the yellow or cream marking behind the head is immediately obvious and diagnostic. You don't want to pick it up to examine its eyes, and find it's an adder after it's bit you!

If it winks at you then it's a slow worm - they are the only ones with eyelids. ;) ;) ;) ;D
