Title: Stored Cauliflower problem
Post by: jeremyf on August 24, 2011, 11:58:44
Hi, I had about 10 cauliflowers hung up in the garage for storing (with roots/upside down)
These were sprayed with water most days for nearly a week but they are now covered in flies - (large fruit flies?)

What can I do to prevent this

Has anyone had much success with storing cauli this way?

thanks

Hmm.. :-\...are you caulis going off..they should not attract the flies otherwise.. :-\
Only time I've stored caulis like that is end of the year when the temperature is getting much cooler..but even then I didn't keep them for long. Even in fridge they don't usually last longer than week.
..and I never sprayed them with water neither.
Odd few I've kept standing in bucket with roots touching a drop of water..but again..not for long periods of time.
Caulis are actually a flower buds of the plant..and like any flowers..they don't keep for long.
So really only reliable way of storing form longer term is freezing or processing them into preserves.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try and freeze the next batch - such a lot of work though.

We have been picking what Caulies we have had this year and  freezing the ones we don't have that week, personally I don't mind if its frozen or fresh because I know it comes from our lotty, :)
