We are looking for a really good sauce tomato. The ones we grow are Shirley, Marmande and some others that we have saved our own seeds, but they are all so watery and pale when mushed up. We tried Roma this year but its growing habits don't suit Tony.
Is there a really good tomato out there that will produce a nice thick juice with a good colour and great taste
Just fermenting dePinto tomato seeds and will put some aside for you to try.

None is ripened yet..but they are getting HUGE..and there is lot in a plant..
So once I have trialled some..you are welcome for some seeds.. ;)
Im trying San Marzano this year but I guess they are a bit similar to Roma..
Plus blight has arrived on our site and I don't think they will ripen in time.
Anyone know a nice early plum/sauce type?
Anyone know a nice early plum/sauce type?
I don't know about being nice as I haven't grown myself ..but in Kokopelli's site they've got few early types that interest me.
De Berao- roma-type
Oregon Spring..semi-seedless tomato
Pheasant- roma-shaped

::)..it's pure torture to go through their site..I'm still trying to fatten my purse until diving into orgy of seed shopping.. ;D
Were you thinking of growing outdoors these early types?
I do have a small plastic greenhouse in which I can grow "indoors" but mostly it would be outdoor growing.
Romas and similar seem to do quite poorly most years on the site - last year being a bit of an exception..
That is a scrummy site goodlife, bookmarked for later - Oregon Spring does look interesting - quick and early.
De Berao - looks like it would prefer a green house - 4.5m - a tall greenhouse!!
Charlie Green.... apparently green ketchup is tastiest... :-X
What lovely surprise I had today.Galina brought me two lots of tomato seeds to Walsall Rd.
Ropreco and De Pinto. The kindness of folks on here sometimes overwhelms me.Thankyou very much Galina :)
That is nice.. ;D Galina..do you want nip to our lottie too.. ;)

great! Hope you'll like them Shirl. DePinto are heavy bearing and sweet, Ropreco Paste are very dark red. Both are fairly small plum types and also suitable for drying.
Would you like some seeds GL? I still have your address. By the way your Mechelse Tros are going well. thank you :)
I am trying Amish Paste tomatoes this year (from www.realseeds.co.uk) They are supposed to be apple sized, mine are smaller but very tasty.
I'm also on the hunt for good saucie tomatoes, and as it's the 1st year with a greenhosue it's a real experiment. I've found the marmande quite dark red when sauced. But then I do sometimes cheat a little by adding a couple of sundried toms into the sauce (but not always) along with a tblsp of red wine, kind of beefs it up..... ssshhhhhh.....

In a dehydrator mostly, but I have no experience of it myself.
This sort of thing:

Some say you can do dried tomatoes in a very low heat oven with the door ajar.
Halve, scoop out seeds, then dry. Havn't done it myself yet.
I tried some two years ago in the oven but it took ages - I mean two days with the oven on lowest.
It did work but you still have to preserve them in oil afterwards and I messed that bit up but what we had was lovely - till they turned to mush!!
I'm bringing this post up again..I've tried to get in touch with Shirl..but I can't get messages through to her?
So..if you see this post Shirl..I've got the seeds for you.. ;)
