Fantastic,,,absolutely superb..why 'telly' people have to use these words constantly..then when you really 'need' them to highlight genuine observation they sound lame because they are over used.
Grumpy morning moments... ;D
So Betula..what started your 'absolutely' situation off then?

A work colleague says it all the time ,no matter what you say.Does my head in,now his partner has started saying it(my boss). Now I love her,she is a great boss. She gave me a lovely plant for doing her a small favour but please please stop it.They have also started emphasising it,drawing it out ...........

Had BBC breakfast on and the presenter said it..............please stop it now  :(

Perhaps you need to start using it in work yourself..drop it in conversation so often that penny finally drops how ridiculous they sound.. ;) Just try to look totally innocent that they don't think you are taking mickey.. ;D ;D

Now you've started something Betula...my pet hate is when someone uses their hand thumb and finger to mimic using a phone. I also hate the quotation mark gesture at the side of their head. it drives me nuts!!

Roughly about... is the one that annoys me,or worse still... as well.

As well is used over here all the time, constantly, I don't think they have heard of  ..also.. or ..too.

The weather channel folks use it at the end of every sentence.

I have to admit I use ..wonderful.. a lot!!

That's one I don't like.  And when people say "comprises of".  And when people refer to themselves as "myself" rather than "me", like they're just too important for such a small word.  And in writing when people use a big "K" of kilo, and a small "m" for mega - are they just going out of  their way to annoy me?

After reporting a stolen credit card the girl ended my call by saying "Have a nice day"...well I guess it had to get better, but it's an expression I loathe.

You phone some company and have a helpful and productive conversation. All is well and you're just about to thank them and hang up when out it comes:"Is there anything else I can help you with today?" At this point I can feel my blood pressure rising and I want to use lots of expletives and shout and scream:"If I'd wanted anything else I'd have asked you"!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Silly really but there it is! ;)

'Amazing' is still overused, so is 'perfect' all of a sudden. What is 'perfect' about my name and address, I'd like to know... ::)
and the next politician to start an answer with 'look' is going to get an amazingly perfect boot up the backside.

..'having said that'...................grrrr!

and the number of times David Cameron uses  ' incredibly'.............

and on TV people saying the 'amount of' for nouns. I always shout at the TV screen when that happens!

Carol, let's start a campaign because I hate the word KIDS too. We need to continually moan about this word, one which virtually amounts to disrespect for our children.

Funnily enough, when was a girl, I used to like being called a 'kid' - it had novelty value and was less authoritarian.  ;D

The convention I thoroughly dislike is one I hear a lot if we go out for a meal in a pub or a restaurant: the waiter or waitress casually asking, "Are you all right there," instead of "Good evening, how can I help?", "Have you booked a table?" or "What can I do for you?" or some other appropriate opener.

If I'm asked "Are you all right there?", it begs the response, "No," in order to progress to the meal I clearly intend to purchase.  Why would a waiter or waitress start the ball rolling by inviting a negative response???  ??? It rubs me up the wrong way, good and proper, and no mistake!  ;D ;D

My mum also hates it when the word kid is used instead of child/ren.  If I ever use it, she says, 'Kids? Kids are what goats have!' Hmm, that's me told :-[ ;D

It bugs me when people finish off their questions or statements with 'yeah?'

'I'll meet you at the cafe, yeah?'
'Then we'll go to Asda, yeah?'

Grrrrrrr.

That's my little rant. Yeah?

Another word that used to get me going was INDEED.     Indeed this, indeed that.   If someone agreed with you, it was 'indeed'.    pah!!!

Absolutely has replaced Indeed.

I also hate being called 'Dear'.  by any shop assistant or whoever.   Also, anyone who sees my first name and starts calling me 'Carol'   when they don't even know me.   Mrs T.....   to you, I want to say.

Def. a grumpy old woman now.

My pet hate is when I call a company and the answer with "good afternoon how may I help you" This is almost as bad as "have a nice day" and people who call a thousand eg:-6000K, but I will admit to using absolutely occasionally, however, I will try to give it up if you can come up with a word that means the same.

It really irritates me when 'mum' is used by the media when 'mother' is appropriate - just seems so patronising.

Also, 'like' scattered through sentences for no apparent reason.

Carol I also hate the familiarity of first names.. Now when I asked my name in  a shop or whatever  I answer with ..my last name , when they ask my first name I say Mrs. That usually is enough.

I hate with a passion, the telephone sellers who phone , know your name and say.." Hi Jeannine, how are you tonight" if I don't recognise the voice I answer "why".. then they reveal who they are and what they are selling..I could throttle them down the line..hate it just hate it..GRRhh

My pet word hates.

I loathe the way the word 'gay' has been hijacked to provide a friendly frontage for various unspeakable acts.

I loathe the use  of 'whatever' as a method of verbal dismissal by teenagers

I despise the use of the phrase 'speed kills' to justify the entirely fallcious basis of the use of speed cameras.

Amazingly kids, Oxford University has done some absolutely wicked research on this, Indeed the results were as follows for the top ten most irritating phrases:

1 - At the end of the day

2 - Fairly unique

3 - I personally

4 - At this moment in time

5 - With all due respect

6 - Absolutely

7 - It's a nightmare

8 - Shouldn't of

9 - 24/7

10 - It's not rocket science
