Title: Strawberry advice needed... newbie to Strawbs...
Post by: gavinjconway on August 17, 2011, 14:00:12
I was given some very dry plants in pots a few months ago and I re-potted them into big long tubs. They are now flourishing and producing a lot of runners.. (I deleted the flowers and fruits to build the plants up as they were really neglected)

I am harvesting the runners into new pots for next season. Once they are growing well i'll obviously snip them from the mother plant. Should I just leave them in the their smallish pots or can I repot them into bigger pots without disturbing the roots ready to transplant into my plot in Spring?  Also should I over-winter them in the open or in my cold greenhouse?  I have read that both options are benificial to the plants!!   ???

Hi there,
I don't think it will harm your plants if you put them on your plot now. Plenty of manure. If british summers are anything to go by, we've had ours. If by some miracle we have a late heatwave, keep them damp. Planting now will give them a good root base before the winter hits. Strawberry plants are very hardy and will see off frost and snow without any probs.

Same as Spudly.

With the exception of 1 year due to work,  I always plant my new strawberry plants out Sep-Oct so they get well established in the ground to produce a bumper harvest the following year.  I missed last autumn planting so planted out in Feb.  I got a small harvest but nowhere near as many as those planted out previous autumns.

Thanks for the replies... I'll have to wait a bit to harvest and cut the cords.... then plant out into bigger tubs without disturbing them as my gardenshare has fallen through for the moment.. so no real ground to grow on other than my flat roof in large tubs!! I also have a greenhoudse now on my roof  ;D ... preperation for the plot when one comes up!!
