Title: Shallot - too big
Post by: queenbee on August 14, 2011, 22:16:17
My shallots are too big to pickle. They are Red Sun Golden Shallots, they are the size of small onions. I can still use them
but not for pickling. I have all the equipment so will have to rethink. I will now try the french beans, a recipe that was given on A4A. What are the best shallots (small) that I can use next year.

You can still save some Red Suns to plant next year..but plant them too close and they will produce numerous smaller bulbs then... ;) Your shallots have just enjoyed some optimum growing conditions this year...I wish mine would have...I've got 'picklers'..'tons' of them.. ::)..fancy a swap with the crop... ;D

Fewer bulbs they produce, bigger they are providing there is plenty of moisture and food availabe when they are growing.
Mine usually grow good size even if there is good clump of them...but this year has been sooo dry that they just didn't grow.
Sometimes I cant wait them to finish before eating some..so I water a clump and carefully pull few off..those left to grow will usually grow into quite large size after they've been 'thinned out'... ;)
