how tall does minipop sweet corn grow mine is about 3 to 4 ft high and no sign of any cobs i wasn't expecting them to grow that high but i lost the packet to check the height
how tall does minipop sweet corn grow?
The 'mini' bit in the name doesn't have anything to do with the size of the plant..it is more of the description of the edible bit. The final size of the plant depends of your soil and amount of water and food available. The hight is not the issue with the crop..sweetcorn (any variety) will yield when the plants are mature enough to do so...and you are not looking to grow proper sweetcorn cobs with minipop anyway..minipop is harvested for immature 'cobs' with no seeds on.
As soon as the silky tassels begin to show you pull those 'cobs' off and harvest the small pale yellow 'core' of the cob inside..
thanks for that info iwas expecting the plants to shorter ive grown ; normal size corn previous and have brilliant r results first time growing minipops was sure the packet said they were shorter ::) so i will be able to let some grow on normally as full size cobs :)
so i will be able to let some grow on normally as full size cobs
I suppose you can...but I have no idea if they taste edible as full size...they are bread for immature cobs after all.
Let us know what they like when left to grow into full size cobs.
We have minipop in and i didnt realise that you had to harvest as the tassels appeared so thanks goodlife for that.
We did take one off yesterday to have a look and its twice the size it should be and that still tastes ok so it will be interesting to see if they can go full size as we have had no luck for the last 2 years growing full sized cobs
Our plants are usually over 8' tall...
the cobs will develop to full size... but aren't very palatable... :)
They will make popcorn if allowed to grow on XX Jeannine
is it possible to grow normal sized sweetcorn but harvest early before the tassels form to get small cobs or is it necessary to grow mini corn variety's for this
You can grow any corn you like, just pull them early, when the silk has just shown for two or three day as long as they don't pollinate. You can remove the male flower too.
There is one variety, I forget the name and get back to you, that is better for baby corn as it gives many more cobs.

Golden Midget is the one I wanted to find, it only grows to about 31/2 feet and has multiple cobs, it is also a short season variety.
i checked mine yesterday the tassels are beginning to show but no sign of a cob anywhere i am sure other years the swelling of the cobs would have been visible by now that's in normal size corn i have grown corn loads of times before but first time of growing mini pop i bought wrong packet but thought oh well i will give them ago as i like small corn and every seed germinated
the tassels are beginning to show but no sign of a cob anywhere
..no there won't be...don't look for the normal looking cob..mini pop is meant to eat for its 'core' of the cob. The part that is usually woody and thrown away after the edible seeds have been chewed away. When picked in immature stage they are creamy white/yellow'ish' and crunchy..no seeds on surface what so ever.
You often see these sold in supermarkets in stir fry mixtures or in frozen veg mixtures..as baby corn. There is no swelling on cob visible..and you just have to shift layers and layers of coverings to find the small little thing..finger size..in the middle...and yes..it does feel like after all the hassle of growing and going through the 'paper' to find that sorry little thing is like somebody showing finger to you..
Don't get confuced with the usual 'corn on the cob' style sweetcorn..baby corn is different looking thing altogether and thats what minipop is meant to grow for... ;)
I grew some Franchi Maize last year but sowed rather late so in the end cut my losses as ate as mini corn it was very nice.
The way my sweecorn is growing this year..looks like I'm going to have 'tons' of baby corn.. ::)..if I'm 'lucky'.. ::) :-\
well i will have to rumage in the leaves yesterday when i looked their was no swellings at all other than the leave joints don't want to miss them and leave grow too big
The top tassle come first and then the females start swelling. Many of the baby corn varieties have red female tassles so they are not easily missed.
Just look at the tip of where the silk comes out, the day you see the first sign that is day 1.,. pick you baby corn cobs no later than day 5..they then will be exactly right. Don't wait to see corn cobs thery are small and well wrapped.. trust me .. no later than 5 days after you see silk. You can pick them as early as day2.
