Title: Raspberry canes - cut or leave?
Post by: newspud9 on August 13, 2011, 17:55:49
I have both summer and ever-bearing raspberry canes.  They always do me proud and I know to prune them down to the ground when they go brown.  What I have at the moment though are some canes which have dark green leaves, but no fruit, and over 5' tall.  Cant work out what these are...non-fruiters from this season, or well-developed very early starters for next.

Many thanks for all the comments.

I would think the latter. My summer fruiting canes have huge green canes among the brown ones I keep meaning to cut down, and I fully expect them to sit there and sprout early next season.

the canes that are green and 5ft tall are the summer fruiting variaty. they need to be tied into some supporting frame work over winter. put some muck ( fym ) around the roots early winter with some seaweed meal and potash and you should have a good crop next summer.
only the canes that are feathered at the top and have turned black or dark mauve need cutting out at leave drop.
