or is it just me? i think i may have gone away at just the wrong time this year and the veg have been a disaster. however the spuds have been good and so far the toms providing they dont get blight. beans and peas a total wipeout. courgettes and pumpkins/squash may now be coming into their own and onions were ok.
anyone else struggled?
debbie
Some of my peas are good, others didn't do much, some just upped and died. The beans are very late, they're just starting now, but there's nothing ready to pick yet.
Pretty good onions and potatoes. Pumpkins only just starting to ramble and nothing much of note in the climbing bean scene. Broadies a disaster losing first 2 lots to frost and third sowing refusing to grow.
Potatoes and lettuce have done well :)
My squash have been slow to take off, but they're rambling all over now, and I've been harvesting courgettes for a couple of weeks.
Had to pull up all but 2 of my tomato plants earlier this week as they started showing signs of blight, will check on the other 2 later today. I had harvested 4 ripe tomatoes from over 30 plants :'( but have lots of green ones for chutney
Peas were ok, carrots poor, so a weird year here too :-\
pots are good im really pleased with the dutch 2nd earlies absolute brilliant numbers tested mymain crop and got 13 potatoes off one plant so they should be ok courgettes have been mental peas were rubbidh runners are good my xmas cabbages are massive i mean huge ::) pumpkins are going orange lettuces are good beeroot are good my 1st year of pickling onion were ok however lost 30% to white rot garlic had to be lifted early cos of the same reason rhubarb excellent radishes were good caulis so so hispe cabbages excellent as usual i love the sweet taste of these ...have frozen enough to last us till next year black berries rasberries lovely
red hot chillies and peppers are romping my wifes carrots were really good and the swedeis coming on a treat loads of tomatoes all still green but thats easy to sort out butternut squash are going for it
really good shallots this year next year i will do 10 times the amount of onions and shallots as i have a 2nd allotment now so that will be good for rotation
but what was really outstanding was our marestail ;D
anyway thats been our year so far
We have had a better year than last year, which was our first, but still not fantastic. Spuds have been great though, we have dug them all up now and have sowed more to be ready for xmas. Carrots rubbish, think i put them in too early although put swede in the same time and they have done well. Second crop of carrots looking better :) Loads of tomatoes but all still green. Cabbage/cauli/brocolli rubbish - won't bother with them again. Sweet corn cobs looking good although the plants aren't very big - compared to others they are tiny, but the cobs are a good size so hopefully they will be ok. Strawbs were rubbish, plenty of runners but very little fruit. Squash now taking over and looking good. All weeds doing well ::)
Going to pull up onions later, they look good.
Manure crops going in tomorrow.
Spuds better than last year
Sweetcorn better than last year
Carrots better than last year
Shallots better than last year
Parsnips nowhere near as many as last year
Rhubarb just one picking worst than last year
Celeriac didn't get going
Pak cho was eaten
:-\
My carrots and beetroot have both been complete right off this year. I planted in march and still they are only and inch long at best! My spuds have been better so far than last, but I have to say I have probably planted alot of stuff a few time before anything has managed to get going! very wierd one!
It has been a much better year than expected in dry East Sussex. Huge and numerous raspberries, beans of all sorts slow to get going but now very productive, broad beans excellent, also mangetouts, courgettes and many other things. Winter squashes not very productive, sadly, except for the magnificent Marina di Chioggia.
On the minus side, trying to sow a July/August wave of seeds for the autumn and winter, the germination (fresh seeds) has been terrible. Very dscouraging.
