Title: Big plea due to bean disaster
Post by: chriscross1966 on August 11, 2011, 12:43:40
I've had weedkiller contamination seriously affect my beans this year, to the point where my entire crop is unlikely to actually get me any seed.... The following are currently dead losses and I don't hhave spare seed:

Climbing Pinto
Canadian Wonder
Ernies Big Eye
Painted Lima
Mennonite Stripe

If anyone can help me out with even a few seeds I will be eternally grateful.... for most of the other varieties I grow I have seed left from last year that still seems fairly viable now so should be OK next spring, so if anyone is interested in these I have them for swaps:

Box
Bridgewater
Climbing Borlotti
Polish Climber
Bird Egg
Soldier
Yin-Yang
Egyptian Pea-Bean

Chris
I've got a whole unopened pack of Canadian Wonder you can have.  It's out-of-date (2009) but I've never found that a problem with beans.  If you want it, PM your address and I'll put it in the post.  I don't need anything in return.

I have some Lima, but will check and see which kind, but you're welcome to some anyway

Sorry to hear about the weedkiller!

That's rotten, Chris.

I haven't got any of the ones you're after but I will have some others that might tickle your fancy! Off the top of my head... monastic coco, Major Cook, Portuguese, ice wax... I was planning to offer some up this winter. Most of them came from A4A members last year!

Had a bit of a disaster myself, many didn't germinate or just died off.  I'm sure it was the compost I bought as my squashes were affected too (had to second sow).

I may have a few mennonite stripe when they ripen, providing they don't get eaten by pigeons or wrecked by kids.

Sorry to hear about your beans Chris. I'm not sure I can be of much help with your list.....

I didn't get around to sowing the Mennonite stripe you sent me, so no fresh seeds from me to share back. Hopefully Uncle-F will have some spare otherwise I'll be happy to share the seeds you sent me.

My Ernie's got flattened by a falling branch, they are looking iffy and slug damaged.... not sure they are saveable  :(

On a brighter note although not on your list, I had my first taste of 'Uncle Walt's Vermont Cranberry' as shelly beans  last night. Very tasty and lovely big beans, easy to shell too. I can save some of these for you later on if you would like.

I'm hoping to offer some beans later on, probably peas too and hopefully something may catch your eye  :)

Many thanks Ceres, were waiting in my inbox when I got back to work today.... you're a star!!.... I had a poke around the lottie this evening, it looks like some of my beans are producing (at reduced rates in most cases.... Also some of the Bridgewater's appear to have pulled through and are now at the top of the canes.... meanwhile the CObra are producing green beans whilst being no more than a foot or so tall....

Chris, I have some barlotti beans seeds you can have, I know it's a bit late now but for next year you are very welcome to have some, my beans have climbed all over the place and I am now begining to harvest them.  :)

I think I may still have some Menonnite purple strip, last years seed but should still be ok.    PM me your addy.

By the way you are being very careful what you do with the remains of the contaminated plants, the compost made from them is virulent.

Won't I see you Thursday at Salga?... Actually the mennonite Stripes have picked up and I might well have a (small) crop.... I'll try and get yup  there tonight and have a look, they seem to have thrown some pods when I looked (briefly) on Saturday..

Is Salga this week?  I normally get an email.  I will try and get to it.  Will probably be in Swindon most days this week, OH getting a bionic knee at GWH.
