Title: Grow Bags
Post by: tim on February 03, 2005, 08:46:34
Would it be sufficient to have one central watering point in a standard (horizontal) bag? = Tim

PS I suppose all bags settle to less than half their length??

Did the gro-bags that you used last year do this too?

Remember Emma, buy your grow bags now before they sell out!!!!!!!!! :-\

p.s.  Tim, some of mine last year settled half way and others stayed almost full!  I ended up topping them all up with compost!!

The organic peat free growbags I've bought from B&Q have hardly settled at all. I've cut them in half and stood them up in the greenhouse ready to plant extra early pots in. They're full to the brim now, but I'll remove a load of the compost to plant the pots, refilling the bag as the haulms grow up. Doubt if I'll be able to get all the compost back in the bags, the way they look now.

I have read that you can grow extra early spuds this way, but I've not tried it before. I'm using Lady Christl and Charlotte pots. Anyone else tried this?

John - not quite as much but nearly. See below. You mentioned recently that research had been done into the right depth of soil for best results.
EJ - lousy quality control??
AD - Google 'container potatoes' & check through all the methods. As I've mentioned before, note that the 5+a day method warns against using soil with fertiliser added because it makes the skins rough. Which would slightly spoil the 'new potato' effect?

In general, are the bagged tubers being started now going to be significantly earlier than the same variety if planted out now - assuming both lots are properly chitted? (Yes, I know that the outdoor ones will need fleecing) = Tim

PS What about my watering question?? Teach me not to try to save room!
