Cant even buy the jars of pickling vinegar in our Tescos, in previous years was able to buy in gallon plastic containers from them, maybe too early.

Will wait until a  kind person comes along to tell where to buy.

Haven't seen any gallons this year.  I must admit I tend to buy a large jar a week wether I need it or not.( pickling vinegar that is ;D)  Never ever seem to have enough jars.  Going to try pickling/chutney cucumbers this year.  1st time I've had any success growing them and wouldn't you just no it, there going like triffids.  Bought mine in Sainsburys as I use to work there.  They seem to stock it all year round.  Perhaps some of the stores have not taken into consideration more people growing their own, more will be preserving their own.

Do you have a kind friend who has a card for Bookers  (or any other catering cash & carry) they usually have gallon containers of it.

Shirlton, ordibnary malt will do, pickling vinegar is not flavoured it is just a wee bit stronger. I use malt for many things, I only use pickling for cukes.

I buy Non-brewed condiment which is  cheaper than vinegar from a Greengrocer -remember them ;)

By the time the sugar and spices have gone in it is fine.

Non brewed vinegar is not reccommended for safe pickles unless you are using them in a few daysXX Jeannine
