Post by: Good Gourd 2 on July 29, 2011, 07:42:52
Every year I get eaten alive by --well I don`t know what.  Tried citrus bands, I am not a whimp but it is jolly uncomfortable and looks horrible.  Any tips apart from don`t go to the lotty. ???

This was recommended to me and it does work.  (reduced at the moment)

I got a roll on afterbite from aldi a few weeks ago but haven't had cause to use it yet. When I am at the allotment I use some citronella spray to ward of the insects.

Have you tried eating garlic oil capsules.  Or eating curry.

When i did live wargaming back in the 80's, (involving running  round dark woods in the small hours hitting each other with paint laden foam swords), we would attract the insects. The best stuff we found was Jungle Formulae. you rub it all over the exposed bits and the midges, gnats and mossies will avoid you like the plague.

I also recommend that Avon spray - I'm amazed they don't make more of it on their website! Cheap at the moment too - I've just restocked!

Agree Mosquito milk is good although bugs don't seem to find me that tasty - probably the nicotine.

The Afterbite is good if you dab the bite as soon as you get it, stops the itch and netralises the biter, it stings though.I keep the dabbers all over the place, house, car etc as bites turn very bad on me.

Skin so soft is great stuff, I use it all of the time because of my job being out in midge and mozzy infested areas.
I never used to get bothered but seem to be getting more bites these days, especially big mamma mozzies giving me huge lumps but the skin so soft stops all that.  No need for fancy formulae

Agree totally that SOS is fab for midgies/mozzies. We all use it for that and its great and stopping skin getting cracked in hot/dry weather.

I use Jungle Formulae for gardening though, as pagued by horse flies. Never get bit by hem if I spray on Jungle stuff :)

I react horribly to mozzie and horse fly bites, best thing I have found to deal with them if you do get bitten is a little yellow 'clicker' which you hold over the bite and press 10 times giving it a minute electric shock. This congeals the irritant in the bite and stops your body reacting so much. You can also hold a hot cup of tea against it to do the same thing, but I once overdid it and ended up with 2nd degree burns on top of a bite...... ::)

I react horribly to mosquito bites particularly but I haven't really found anything that prevents me getting bites. I would have to cover my whole body with whatever product it was since I seem to end up with bites all over - even with long trousers and long sleeves. I think they must either bite through the fabric or crawl under the edges.

Recently, however, an aromatherapy friend noticed my plight - scratching my arm till it bled - and offered some lavender oil.  One drop and the fire went out of the bites. That was 3 days ago and those bites have more or less disappeared or at any rate are not annoying me at all, whereas similar vintage bites untreated are hot and itchy still.

Mozzies definately bite through clothing, I never wear short pantaloons out working or fishing, especially at night when I'm out doing bat surveys, yet I've still had huge bites on my legs.

SSS seems to work for me with horseflies too.  I think it's only drawback is if your sweating or skin is getting rubbed by clothing, etc it can rub off and needs re-applying

My feet have been bitten  badly by mossies whikle sitting at the lotties, the last couple of days I have sprayed my feet with Windex..for cleaning windows and they have left me alone..Glass Plus I think it is called in the Uk..anyway the blue stuff with ammonmia in..it is ammonia that is in the Afterbite sticks..anyway whatever
it seems that they stay away from the smell of glass cleaner and it takes the itch out of old bites too..

Don't laugh but having been bit something rotten and having no after bite stuff someone told me to rub in Vick-I have never seen bites clear up so fast.

Vick contains menthol; I don't know what it does to bites but it's a pretty good antiseptic.

If I rub raw onion on my bite straight away it takes away the itch and the pain, I have an avon spray repellient but I can't remember the name of it.   ;D

At the moment I've got 'millions' of mossie bites.. >:(..and all are itchy, red big lumps.. >:(
Insect bite creams don't work for me for long..after couple of days the cream itself start causing itchiness.. ::)
But I've found out that those hand sanitizing gels does the job quite well..the alcohol cools the skin and ease the itch down to tolerable level.. ;D....and I suppose kills any bacteria too that may cause infection..it just stings a lot if the skin is broken.. :-X..outch..

i never got bitten until i had my boys and something must of changed as everytime i go to the allotment i have at least 2, went there the other day and the little critter bit me 4 times on one foot and twice on the other, i was unable to work for 2 days due to the swelling and pain that i had in them, not nice!
Husband swears by jungle formula and b complex capsules, neither work for me though

Its Avon skin so soft, and i find it works very well and gives you lovely soft skin to boot,
But it does attract dirt to stick to your skin when digging tho.

" Don't laugh but having been bit something rotten and having no after bite stuff someone told me to rub in Vick-I have never seen bites clear up so fast".

My daughter in law (Thai) smelled very odd the other day, and I found she had a little tub of something smelling rather like Vick that she was rubbing on her bites. I couldn't read the writing, but have now thought of asking her if it is Tiger Balm.

Tiger Balm every time.   Two years in Singapore and two in Hong Kong,  I would never be without Tiger Balm.   They now make a clear / white one for the wussies !     :D      Cheers,   Tony.
