Title: carrots
Post by: luckycharlie on July 27, 2011, 14:01:13

Have just picked some of my carrots they are lovely but all shapes!!

I am sure I read on here about growing in sand. Can anyone tell me what kind of sand and do I need to mix it with anything else. Is it too late to sow more now

Thanks

X Chas

Carrots will grow in practically anything, but if you want the unforked, there needs to be no stones and no clumps of fertiliser or manure.

I grow them in multipurpose compost in a bath.

The show growers grow carrots singly in sand/compost  in 4 inch drainpipes, to get them perfectly straight.

The mix for carrots is
2 Parts Soil Riddled twice
1 Part Sharp Sand Riddled twice
1 Part Multi Purpose Compost or Peat I recomend Humax Multipurpose
Feed

4 Parts lime
2 Parts Potash
2 Parts Fish Blood and Bone
