Well it doesn't seem that long ago that we were up to 10.000 members does it. Almost 12.000 now so I think we must have a lot of lurkers as we don't have many new members posting. Come on folks, we don't bite, well, not very often ;).
I have noticed that we tend to be quieter during the summer.........probably making the most of time on the plots :)
Thought I'd just say hi. Most days my 2 year old grandson is here, and I have a 5 month old puppy. Don't get much computer time, I just pop in now and then. But it is a super place to come to.
When I joined the board in 2003 there was less than 400 people on the membership list. It has come a long way since then, and may it always continue. Thanks Dan. :-* busy_lizzie
The total number of members includes spammers who have been banned and so will never post. Since 1 July, 52% of new members are spammers.
A large number of members of this site all so post on other sites !!

Is there a filter now Ceres? I have not noticed any spam posts recently?
So how do you decide whether a new member is spam or not.
Is there any way of working out how many active members there are now.

It's all done manually at the moment. Some registrations are obvious spammers - e.g. a viagra website as a signature. There are also databases of spammers and the one that I mostly use can be linked to make the process automatic. When a spam post gets through, I always report the details to the database. I've suggested linking the forum to the database to Dan to reduce the workload in keeping spammers out but no response as yet.
In terms of how many active members there are, it depends how you define active. I can't see any way of calculating e.g. how many have visited/posted in the last
n days/weeks/months although Dan might have that kind of info. The Members' List can be sorted by the headings so you can work out that out of the total membership of approx. 12,000, approx. 6,200 have never posted. However that doesn't necessarily mean that they're inactive, they might just lurk.
I lurked for a while ;) ;D.
So did I.
X Chas
There are certainly several hundred regulars. Have a look at the member list ordered by number of posts (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php?action=mlist;sort=posts;start=0) and you have to get several pages in before the names start getting unfamiliar.

I just jumped straight in- I loved it as soon as I saw it!! ;)
Thanks for the hard work Ceres and other mods. to keep the site "clean" ;D ;D
There are a number of very habitual lurkers. There are several names which often pop in in the Users Online box and who have never posted.
A big thanks from me as ever to The Mods and Dan I do love this site, I have made some great friends through this site.
Hi Yall,
I don't know how you will class me as I'm not a newbie ::)( I have recently moved house, area and B/Band provider and got me a new log in name. It was I think bobitybob. :P
I didn't post much before but regularly logged onto the site for updates etc. Is this Lurking? ;D
I had to very reluctantly give up my lottie but am now on the waiting list for a site near here.
I have just been looking through all my seeds and labels etc, I can tell you it brought a tear to my eye as I only have a couple of tubs at the moment.
I have now forgotten why I started to post this so I will finish and go get a brew.
Bob
I was a lurker because i felt i was intruding ,everyone seem to know each other so well,i did post a couple off times but went back to the lurking ,then remembered shy kids get nout.
Hi Clay & Bobby,
Nice to see you both posting. I hope you lurk no more! ;D ;D
Claybasket, I remember thinking along very similar lines when I first joined, everyone knows everyone, but as I found out, they're a friendly mob, and a generous bunch too, so keep hanging around :)
And hi bobby - hope the waiting list isn't too long :)
I've been lurking for years. :-*
Does your wife know Corny ;D ;D ;D.
Im a definate Lurker.......you all seem to know much more than me! But im a regular visitor, lots of good info......but no gems of wisdom to pass on.......all i seem to be growing is endless FAT HEN!
We don't actually know that much - we just pretend to!!
Apart from Tee Gee, of course....
Quoteall i seem to be growing is endless FAT HEN!

Well I've been told it is edible!
It is certainly edible, but for me has a slightly soapy taste. I think that it lost out when spinach arrived on the scene.
I think it is sought after by the wild foragers. Not too bad for a nibble in the early spring when there is not much else.
But basically a terrible nuisance especially as it seems to have a 150% germination rate and the seeds are not killed either by passage through an animal or processing in a compost heap.
I've eaten fat hen and if picked when still small and used with other greens..its ok..but it needs to be picked almost straight into bowl..it goes limp very quickly and its not nice at all..yuk..
I used to know a bloke who went picking wild and hedgerow plants for his family for salads and stuff but I reckon it can be a bit dodgy unless you know exactly what you're doingand what might have been sprayed in said hedgerow.
As for users, II looked at the list and it seems a lot I recognise haven't been active on here for a couple of years or more so the main core of regular posters and lurkers is probably quite small. Either way, it's a good, friendly site with some knowledgeable people willing to share their wisdom and experience no matter how basic or esoteric the question. The daftest questions of all are the ones people don't ask and then carry on and get it wrong out of ignorance.
Thanks to all involved in running the site and the regulars who make it a pleasure to visit.
Hey you donèt need to know anything to be here sweetie, in the shed we talk about everything so stop lurking and come and join us..you will be surprised what you know and can share..please donèt be put off. Seiously I would hate to think someone didnèt post for this reason. I go on a forum that is filled with experts and I feel uncomfortable, I always think that A4A is much more friendly and informative as we all donèt mind asking questions here,no one makes anyone uncomfortable .
So get yourself out...
XX Jeannine
Guess I better post something as I have just been lurking again of late. ;D
Newbies are always warmly welcomed on here and as others have pointed out you do not need to be an expert to join in at all.
nothing like a good lurk ;D

not recently, I've noticed that, B
Now that is scarey :o being in the chat room. I've only been a few times and not for a long while. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, it was all new to me and I just couldn't keep up! Perhaps a newbie chat slot once in a while may encourage others?
I'v enever done the chat thing ......... :-[
The chat thing is good, especially in the winter, when it gets dark early. We all talk rubbish and pass round drinks and snacks (virtual ones). Funny that when I go on, everyone else goes to bed. ;D ;D ;D
i was also a lurker for quite a while (and still do )be fore getting the nerve to post
Trouble is if we all lurk for too long there will soon be nothing to read so pluck up courage and write away.A friendly bunch on here in the main so don't be afraid LOL ;D
I'v done more lurking then posting recent :-*ly :-[
still around tho
marg
Hi,
I haven't been around so much lately, just popping in now and again, but I am here and can't ever imagine giving up A4all. Life just seems to have got busier at the moment but mustn't complain. Just glad you are all still here :) :)
Take care
T.
Hi Marg and Tulipa..where you been gals..get yourselves back!!
XX Jeannine
